Hi Cheryl,

I believe that Odesk is a fantastic way to find an online job but after trying for sometime I was just bittten by reality that it is not really that easy because at the onset of the financial crisis too many jobseekers are trying to outdo each other by offering the lowest rate. In my case, I have had experiences in writing, editing, online research and so much more experience in encoding/data entry, accounting and so on. Unfortunately, I haven’t found a job yet. Odds are really not on the side of those who are only new to Odesk.

Any expert opinion on this would be appreciated.

Miguel: P.S. When I mentioned that I received assistance from oDesk whenever I needed it, I can’t impress upon you enough how great these people are! When you need assistance with understanding something, or assistance with any questions you may come up with, they help you. I would recommend oDesk to anyone.

Miguel: I’m sorry you find the process complicated. It’s like any new thing that you’ve never done before – sometimes a little difficult. I had been laid off from my job for several months, and really needed something to happen. I had applied at many places, am qualified in various areas, had good references, etc. No one was hiring. So, through a series of events, I found out about oDesk, and I am working, bringing money back into my home, have received assistance from oDesk whenever I needed it, and I am very grateful. I didn’t understand everything either, but I asked questions, got answers, and now I have a job! That makes me happy. I wish you the best, Miguel.

Annette: I have been working for oDesk for a little while now, and have had GREAT experiences. I will say that what happened to you happened to me once. I simply deleted the email, cancelled the job, and went on to the next one. I had had such great jobs with oDesk already so I knew this was like the proverbial needle in a haystack. The job was for ‘data entry’ which turned out to be ‘date entry’. I declined, chuckled and carried on. It isn’t the norme at all for that to happen. So, I would definitely continue to apply. You might just run across some great people and great experiences and job(s). I did!

Annette I’ll answer this question for Cheryl I am also a member of oDesk and no, they are the exception. Work on adult sites is supposed to be clearly marked by the buyers as adult work. My profile on oDesk clearly states I will not work on adult content. They are more an exception than a rule.

Hello Cheryl,

Like you I watched Tory Johnson on GMA and have signed up for oDesk. I received my first interview offer yesterday. I was happy to get an interview until I received the e-mail from the company with qualification testing. The websites for the testing were all singles’ sites. I replied that the content did not match the moral standards that I live by and declined the offer. Is this the type of work one can expect to do? Are there ways to prevent receiving jobs that are not within a person’s moral standards?

Some of us, watch CNN in Spagnol,Portuguesse, etc. because we are from foreign countries. I found the system so much complicated, to be a member and to apply for a job. And just for an average of 30-50 USD /hour? I spent 15 years of my life doing consulting activities, and one of the premises is “how to make the life easier for our customers” not so complicated. I work normally for American companies, I was trying to increase my contact through this page, but everything is so complicated (as example just one topic to read before the test involve too many subtopics and so complicated the rules. There are a lot of wellknown pages where you can buy an item: you apply – buy- pay – receive the item in the other side of the world and everybody is happy. This is an intangible product (consultant job)and everything is so complicated. Nobody with experience and relationships will spend his/her time trying to get an interview for a job of 30 dollars/hour.

Imran, You need to go online, fill out a profile, which includes your work history and skills. Then, you need to take the oDesk Readiness Test, the English Test, and any other tests that would pertain to you and your abilities. It gives you step-by-step instructions, but if you need assistance, there is the ‘Help’ section to refer to. I hope this assists you in getting started. Much luck to you.

Deb, I’m not sure if you’re meaning the jobs you’ve applied to locally online as to saying “job can’t be found.” If so, I can tell you that the same thing happened to me when I was applying online through the local paper where I live. Every single online job I applied for seemed bogus, to put it mildly. It wasn’t until I found out about oDesk that I finally came across a viable site that was real all the way around. Have you tried applying with oDesk? They are legitimate! It isn’t what you’re doing wrong. I’m not sure how those other sites can be allowed to post when you can never get to the actual job, but they do. Give oDesk a try! Fill out a profile, take relevant tests, and go from there. The people at oDesk are very nice and helpful. Take care and I wish you the best!

i don’t understand what is going on here really, I am looking for an at home job. But every job i find and go to apply for says job can’t be found. Why is that?? Can you tell me what i am doing wrong.
