I can see the merit in your post however the fact remains that the standard of English from Indian and other L2 countries is below that of native speakers. This is most obvious in idiomatic speech and so forth but of course is irrelevant for many tasks such as web design and programming. It appears that capitalism is indeed in charge, along with a willingness to accept less than best for web content in exchange for a lower price. This is exactly the same situation as with all the cheap goods coming out of China. They also tend to copy and counterfeit brands but more fool the greedy manufacturers for making things over there in the first place. More fool people who will save a few dollars and buy rubbish that won't last. It is difficult for native speakers to compete with someone who is willing to accept a dollar or two per hour. Of course I wouldn't change places with that person. I would rather pick and choose the assignments where they are willing to pay for quality writing using first class English. Having lived in India and the Philippines I have many native friends who are very well educated but have so few opportunities in their own countries. oDesk gives them a chance to make a respectable living without having to emigrate.
