Below are oDesk rate statistics broken out by job categories and distributions.
Shows the average hourly rates on hourly jobs, broken out by job categories, by quarter.
Shows rate distribution for all hires made on oDesk for hourly jobs only over all time.
Shows rate distribution for all hires made on oDesk for hourly jobs only, for providers that have completed a minimum of 1000 hours, over all time.
Shows all currently registered providers grouped by listed hourly rate.

That sounds like a very American complaint. You see the 10% fee as a tax and we know Americans hate taxes, they smell too much like socialism etc. Well, the reality is this; you knew the fee was 10% when you signed on. You don't have to use oDesk, go and use the other guy who charges 5% and has the ability to give you as much work as you have had with oDesk since you joined. Obviously they need the money or else this would be a free public service. And then how good would it be? I note the big businesses you quote are both US owned. Keep in mind the current global financial crises that has affected the world was caused by US banks and US real estate greed.
I understand the problem with the buyer but then it is up to you to negotiate a higher rate. That is the free market the US loves, providing they have tariffs to protect their own industries. Don't blame oDesk for giving you a chance to make a living. Be grateful. If you don't like the rules you are free to leave, this ain't a Gulag! And please, stop whining. The rest of the world is sick of hearing it.
