Below are oDesk rate statistics broken out by job categories and distributions.

Shows the average hourly rates on hourly jobs, broken out by job categories, by quarter.

Trends in outsourcing hourly rates over year

Shows rate distribution for all hires made on oDesk for hourly jobs only over all time.

Shows rate distribution for all hires made on oDesk for hourly jobs only, for providers that have completed a minimum of 1000 hours, over all time. 

Shows all currently registered providers grouped by listed hourly rate.

Other freelance marketplaces (which I am not allowed to mention names) charge up to 15% on top of tiered monthly fees to either apply for more jobs or apply to jobs in multiple categories.

Personally, meaning I'm not speaking for oDesk at this point, but as a Provider as well: I think 10% is extremely fair - especially since I set my rates according to what I want to make, and oDesk adds their fees on top of it. I can apply to jobs in multiple categories (which I have done in the past) for no additional fees. Not to mention the fact that payment on hourly jobs are guaranteed and weekly - this means I have a steady income stream and not having to wait for milestones or entire projects to come to an end before I get paid. All of that makes it well worth the $3 off the top of my hourly rate.
