Overview
Below are oDesk rate statistics broken out by job categories and distributions.
Shows the average hourly rates on hourly jobs, broken out by job categories, by quarter.
Shows rate distribution for all hires made on oDesk for hourly jobs only over all time.
Shows rate distribution for all hires made on oDesk for hourly jobs only, for providers that have completed a minimum of 1000 hours, over all time.
Shows all currently registered providers grouped by listed hourly rate.

I don't have a number for how much I think it costs. I just can't imagine them needing near as much money as they take.

It's not about what other sites charge, it's about being charged fairly.
And if indeed they do need so much money to run their website and make a decent profit, then I would like to learn about it, and I would have no problem paying the fee.
But my guess is that they are getting super rich (as are all those other companies who charge even more than Odesk) by taking some extra money from me that would be very helpful for my tight-budgeted life. I'm not saying they shouldn't be very wealthy--they have a super successful web-business after all. But I think they would still be rich if they offered a smaller rate. Then everyone could be happy.
