Work Diary 2.0 (Beta)
on Mon, 2008-03-31 23:07. News We've redesigned the Work Diary to make it easier for you to use. We think you'll love these great new features:
- The new Work Diary will open within the main navigational window instead of popping up in its own window.
- The left navigation section can be hidden so that users with narrower screens and/or lower resolutions can see the entire row of screenshots without scrolling.
- The new Preferences bar allows you to toggle the following settings:
- Time Zone between yours, the user's, or GMT
- Time Format between 12- and 24-hour
- View between Thumbnail and List format
- If you are a member of multiple Teams, easily switch from one Team's Work Diary to another using the new Team selector drop-down menu in the upper left.
- If your Team has multiple members, easily switch from one user's Work Diary to another using the new user selector drop-down menu in the upper left.
- In your own Work Diary, you can now edit memos in-line one at a time or simultaneously change a whole batch of memos using the checkbox selectors and the Edit Memo button in the upper right.
- Offline time can be added using the Add offline time button in the upper right. You should add a memo to your offline time when you create it. Memos on offline time may also be changed in-line or in a batch. (Don't forget to get permission from the buyer before logging offline time.)
- The Work Diary URLs are now in a more logical format: www.odesk.com/workdiary/team/user/date
You can find the new Work Diary in My oDesk > Work with Your Team > Work Diary (Beta):
http://www.odesk.com/workdiary
Check out these new features plus many other refinements that add up to a cleaner, clearer, faster user experience.
If you run into any problems, please let us know. (You can use the "Classic" Work Diary in the meantime.)
And we'd love to know what you think! Post your comments below.
Glad you like it!
on Thu, 2008-04-10 22:13.Doreen,
Many thanks for the compliment. We're glad you consider it an improvement!
In reply to the title of your post: "For some reason that I've not figured out!… I got this 'new' look today for the first time."
The new Work Diary is currently a public beta - so you can (for now) choose to use the "classic" Work Diary or the public beta. You probably arrived by clicking "Work Diary 2.0 (beta)" in the Team Room or from the left nav within "Work with Your Team."
(We will eventually remove the "classic" Work Diary in favor of this new one.)
Regarding your suggestion, do you mean:
A) You would like to more easily send selected screenshots via email?
or
B) You want billed time to be transfered in some way?
Please clarify, and thanks again for your post,
Larry Stone, oDesk

Hi! I was clear as mud wasn't I <grin> Sorry -
Yes I would like the billed time logs to be transferred from IC's I hire to do a job (which is really a sub-contract of a job I've been hired for).
Here's what we're doing: Buyers are hiring me *under company profile* I opened up jobs for my 'providers' and they log their hours using 'memos' to differentiate the projects I assign them (different buyers daily sometimes) - I only assign one buyer per day to these providers because otherwise the printing of the screen shots would be very cumbersome :)
Buyers are fully aware I'm doing this and at the moment I'm logging it to them as 'off-line time' which is working out fine (I had relationships with these buyers prior to switching gears here). I currently print the logs (one day at a time/one provider at a time) and email them the logs so they can actually see we are working on their project.
Buyers are currently happy with this arrangement so it's not a problem in reality (and probably not too many folks are doing this the way I am LOL) it would just be a time savings.

subcontracting

Great post, I'm quite pleased that you are exploring the system in these new ways! Unfortunately you're using functionality we haven't built yet
.
Basically, you want to subcontract work from oDesk buyers to other oDesk providers. This is exactly what we want to enable - people like you building lucrative businesses within oDesk! The way to do this is by using the Provider Company infrastructure. Invite providers as ACs in your company, and then submit candidacies for them to oDesk jobs. Thus, on each assignment:
- The Buyer is the Buyer
- The AC is the Provider
- Your company is the Provider Company
If you do it this way, then the buyer will see all screenshots automatically, since they're the buyer and the provider is logging time to their team room.
Now, I understand that this doesn't really work for you at the moment, since all of the money goes to you, and you will have to pay them outside the system, which is inconvenient. But we are working hard on "splitting the money" so hang in there!

Once I got over some technical glitches (thanks to you, Stephanie and others) and realized what I was doing wrong it's working fine now (i.e. I was paying myself thinking I was paying the sub-contractors DOH). I flipped the wrong switch - leave it to me to use features that don't exist <grin> I love to push the envelope

I got this 'new' look today for the first time. However, with that said I'd like to compliment you on the friendlier look and feel of this console as well as the team room. It's very nice to work with compared to the 'old' look which I found a little awkward at times.
I'd like to make a suggestion on your 'team' concept (which is awesome by the way). I've love to be able to 'move' screen shots from my providers to my buyers (does that make sense?). So as an affiliate I hire people to help on jobs for buyers and currently I'm downloading the screen-shots to send via email - I don't know if you can figure out a way to transfer them but it would be awesome if you could
