Hello everyone!! Just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Rebecca Thompson and I am excited about being part of this community. I just placed my bid on 2 jobs and they both got shot down due to too high of a bid. I guess I need to look at others to see what they are bidding at. Oh well.....chalk it up to inexperienced.

Hi Rebecca, I just wanted to let you know that I'm also new here at oDesk. So far I've only applied to one job so I'm not too hopeful at this point. I know it's going to take a lot of hard work to land my first job so I'm prepared for it!
I've only just finished uploading all the info for my profile - that was very time consuming but I'm sure it will pay off in the end. Well let's hope we do well at this. I guess we just have to keep at it and see what happens? Have a nice weekend...

While it is not uncommon for providers to charge lower for their first couple of projects to build reputation on oDesk, you can also trying making sure it is clear in your coverletter why you are a better choice for this or that project than someone with seemingly similar skills but lower bid/hourly rate.
You can also consider using external reference to get your first projects though oDesk (instead of your oDesk history).
