Transferring the Finished Product to the Buyer

Hi,

I'm fairly new to oDesk and I've read up on a lot of things. But, I'm wondering...and haven't found the answer... to my questions in your help category. I'm a graphic designer and illustrator. I know from previous experience (not on oDesk) that file sizes can be enormous! Emailing them is totally out of the question normally. So...

1. "How do I transfer the finished product to the buyer after the job is completed?"

2.  "Do I wait until the job is closed/ended before I send it OR  do I send it first and then close/end the job OR do I collect my money first then send the buyer the finished product?" (the last one is what I normally do for any client, but I realize oDesk can do things differently).

Thanks for your time. Hope to hear back soon!Smiley

Unfortunately, I'm going to

Unfortunately, I'm going to have to say 'it depends'.

How:

  • This is up to you and the buyer. If the file is too large for email, you'll have to use an alternate tranfer method, such as ftp, or hosting the file online for the buyer to download.
  • You may opt to use the SVN repository that's part of your oDesk Team Room for this purpose.

When (please note the difference between the two jobs types - it's very important):

  • If it's an hourly job, you're guaranteed payment for you time on a weekly schedule, so just send the final product when it's done. Don't end the job before sending the product - the buyer won't be happy and will leave you bad feedback. Ended hourly assignments get paid on the same weekly schedule as current ones, so it's ok to hand over the product and end the assignment before receiving the final payment.
  • If it's a fixed price job, payment isn't guaranteed by oDesk. So you'll have to come to an agreement for when money will be paid out with the buyer. I'd recommend working something out involving milestone payments instead of waiting for it all at the end of the job. Don't end the job before you've been paid and handed over the product. But it's up to you and the buyer to decide what order the money and the file transfer will be in.

Perhaps some of our other users can offer guidance on large file transfer methods and fixed price pay/product arrangements.
