Black List of Buyers
ok guys...my name's Yas and i'm a graphics and web designer at oDesk...using this service for more than 1.5 years and have about 1500 hours worked at it...this is my primary job and i put all my efforts on it...
So as you can see i'm trying to get the best of my work and sometimes i can't because of unfair Buyers...
Ok, the ideas is that i would like to suggest oDesk to make a Black list of Buyers...i'm not sure how this would be implemtented...but...here's the case...i was interviewed by a Buyer....he said could i make a mock up for him for and then he will hire me if everything goes ok...
I made him a mock up...he was cool with it...then he asked to make a flash splash page...and then he will hire me...well i made him a little one...(i know how they treat us) ok and then he disappeared....in a week he came online and told me that: oops, someone in my company was already managed this project...and hired already someone...i'm sorry ))))))
So i think oDesk need's to have a black list of Buyers...where we Providers can send someone's Name and also we cuould have a Service we can call Check black list...so you before starting working with a buyer put his name into a Textfield and then press Check black list...and it will tell you either he's already there or he's clear...
Hope it will help
With best regards YAS
Yup...here is the project
Yup...here is the project id: 1324995
and his name is Kurth Cambridge
just opinion
IMHO buyer can change's their name, or make a new account after their banned,. so it's useless.
people become dishonest, buyers can get a bunch of briliant idea from provider with no need to pay anything, and get job done for free,.. even we put a watermark on every single pictures. they can used it.
maybe, if somebody want to be come a buyer,. they need to supply the company/personal name and address, so we can see who's the buyer is.that probely can minimize the problems.
i'm prefered before buyer want to put a project they must put a fix rate money to odesk first, every provider need to post the project to public, so everyone can see the work's. and provider can see who's win the project.
correct me if i'm wrong.
It's not entirely an excercise in futility...

It's not entirely an excercise in futility. If the buyer already has an OVPM, prior history of jobs & payments, as well as positive feedback, he loses all of those (even if those were only "setups"). Starting again from scratch without all that prior history (if he had any) would make serious providers think more carefully before applying to his so-called "jobs."
It may not stop these unscrupulous members completely, but at the very least I'd certainly want to see them go through hoops again before they're able to even try and scam legit providers once more. A blacklist, as suggested by the thread-starter, does have its merits insofar as warning the provider community of these intellectual property thieves.
Of course, I'm sure we're all hoping for something that could serve as a more effective deterrent, as well as a proactive mechanism for weeding out undesirables from both the provider & buyer communities. Until then, we'll all have to keep the faith in the system.
keep the faith
absolutly right, need to keep the faith,
and it's need more times.
just hoping Odesk can provided the good solution in their system.
did anybody here have an experiences with http://99designs.com?
Too bad
That providers don't think to scan the forums before they apply for jobs. More and more scammers are being called out here (which I personally think is a good thing). It would have prevented something like this thread and article.

You were scammed
A very common scam, asking for usable samples - they probably took the mockup and the flash page and had someone real cheap implement it.
You have 1200 hours worked, feedback average of 4.8, and over 20 projects. They can look at your past work and see the quality. A serious buyer would not be worried if someone with your history expects to be paid for a couple hours of work.
If someone asks for a mockup, tell them to create a short-term job for building the mockup and invite you to the job. And the same for the flash screen.
With a short paid assignment you also get to leave feedback!
on Tue, 2008-10-07 18:14.I think all providers should be careful when giving out free work samples in the hopes of landing a job. As has been suggested above, a short-term, paid assignment on a trial basis would be a better approach. Plus, with an assignment, both parties are able to leave feedback.

oDesk
Better yet...
watermark your samples as "Sample Only" or whatever you can come up with, for it to become unusable.

A watermark won't help if
A watermark won't help if they are taking those samples to another provider anyway.
That is a double-prong solution for any scammers.
And I agree that, if somebody is out to scam us, they would go to that extent. Unfortunately, I could only try to protect myself from my end. If another provider decided it's ethical for them to remove that type of watermarking, that is really up to them.
In the end we can only protect ourselves, each and everyone of us must decide whether we will get scammed or not.
Thank you for your
Thank you for your suggestion, I will pass it on.
May I suggest that you submit a help ticket to report any buyer who behaves inappropriately. The oDesk support team does suspend and/or close accounts of buyers who violate oDesk policies. But it's up to the community to report that behavior.
