How do you get your first job?
I'm a total newbie on here... and I'm not expecting to make a huge amount of money right at first, but I just need some tips on how to get started so I can earn some feedback and get better jobs.
In the real world, I've made as much as $11/hour as a Data Entry Clerk. I've got plenty of experience doing data entry and computer-related jobs, and I had a good reputation with every boss that I've worked for. How does this translate into a good job on odesk? What can I put in my cover letter to get the buyer to notice my skills? Also, how much money should I ask for on an hourly basis?
Thanks!

Welcome to oDesk,
Welcome to oDesk, Kathy!
Unfortunately, data entry is a highly competitive field here at oDesk. Keep in mind, that here you will be competing with providers from other countries, where the standard of living is lower and who can therefore charge a lower rate.
So before you start adjusting your rate to the market average (you can see the rate stats in the oConomy, think about what makes you worth your current rate. This could be anything from being a native English speaker, to being available for phone and personal interviews to your very detailed knowledge of this or that area. You will likely have have to tweak this selling point for every job you apply to.
Also, do check oDesk Insider blog, this is a blog written for oDesk Providers by odesk Providers and has tons of interesting ideas and useful tips.
Of course, should you have any more questions or concerns - we are here to help.
Good luck!
