Stagnant Job postings and "scam" postings

There are a large number of jobs that arent being hired but are posted.  How long are buyers allowed to leave these postings open and cluttering up the system?  I am new to oDesk and I dont see a lot of postings that are worth my time.  There are other applicants with more qualifications than me or there are so many applicants and no interviews completed. 

The number of actual jobs available seems to be small.  I was hopeful that I would find assignments but between the cheap workers available for our USA buyers and the number of assignments with questionable activities, I'm afraid that oDesk is a going to fail to help me find work.

Is there a listing that shows how many providers there are here at oDesk? how many are on assignments? how many buyers have assignments listed? how many buyers have actually hired providers?  These are important facts that will help boost the marketing of oDesk but I haven't found it yet.  There is a great deal to be learned about oDesk and I have been working on my profile and testing for days.
