I can't compete - Part 2 - COMPANIES, PAY ATTN
I, myself, am very disappointed. I heard about this company on Good Morning America and had high hopes since I recently had a baby and LONG to work from home. I have read these posts and can tell the intelligent providers from the, well, not so intelligent ones. Want to know why we can't compete??? Because this is outsourcing at it's finest. And what's worse is that reputable companies that we do business with everyday are using this illegally. It is disgusting and I will sign on as another name, reduce my costs and compete just to find out who these companies are - I am not doing anything else anyway and YOU DISGUST ME.
The economic slowdown makes it worse. There are those who responded in the first thread to just "stick with it and soon you'll double your rate." (What is that by the way? TWO dollars an hour?)" How foolish! YOU ARE ALLOWING SUCH BEHAVIOR! Find legitimate companies and work for them - legally. If being legal is just not an option, then I suppose, do this but otherwise, give yourself a break and the RESPECT you deserve. You are using your time, your computer, your phone, and whatever else is asked of you! For a dollar or two an hour???
What probably disappoints me the most is the is the"appearance" ODesk portrays. A newbie sees $12.00/(12 hrs) and makes the assumption the job (um...understandably for what is being asked) that the job pays a total of $144.00 when in reality, it's $1.00 an hr. It is beyond belief that the makers of Odesk can sleep at night.
Think people, think.
Criminal
I never realised that I was doing something illegal. Should I expect some goons at the door, ready to throw me in jail?
I'll send some right over
Martyn -
I'll send some goons over straight away. We have a county sheriff here with pre-trained goons we would love to get rid of. They'll have you beaten into shape in no time.
Wow
I guess I'll be expecting the FBI, CIA or Department of Homeland Security to knock at my door any minute now.
Don't get excited folks
We have someone who's been here a grand total of 2 days telling the rest of us that we can't succeed here on oDesk.
What you see is yet another temper tantrum from someone who just discovered that they actually have to *work* to develop a reputation for work here on oDesk.
What this person was interested in doing was signing up and immediately starting work without having to do any of the legwork that all of us had to do to get started. It's that whole instant gratification thing that is so prevalant in today's society.
So, rather than invest the time in their future, this passerby decides to scream at all of us and clearly intends to violate the terms of service by signing on as another user and then 'threatening' buyers. Clearly not someone who understands ISP footprints heh?
Nothing to see here except a 2 day 'veteran' who thinks that they know more than the other providers and users of oDesk.
Doreen
I think that in actual office work...
...first you have to apply for the position before you can start working, at oDesk you don't even have to leave the comfort of your home to apply , but this is a new frontier, rumor mongering is of no value here, but patience is a virtue.

Oh my! my !
what can i say, except for the meaningless noise.
Sorry :)

Sorry for being such a smart aleck but it's pretty hard for me to take someone seriously that comes here and in 2 days decides that oDesk is operating illegally and makes threats to buyers then on top of that threatens to violate the terms of service to boot.

Hi Doreen Was that comment
Hi Doreen
Was that comment directed at me .. coz.. i am not the one saying oDesk is illegal..etctec.. and I am not certainly THE 2 day vetran..
My comment was to say how aptly you have captured the psyce of the the 2-day expert.
Sorry if it had hurt you.
not at all

I wasn't hurt at all. I was merely apologizing for being so flip about it. As you aptly pointed out my response was rather nonchalant even if it did properly reflect the providers stance

Illegal? Please explain?
What's illegal about about hiring someone?
$1 per hour is still above minimum wage in many countries.
Call these guys
Are they still around? I can't find their profile. But you shouldn't start complaining after 2 days. I got 2 jobs after about 11 days.
If you think oDesk is illegal, call the BBB.
I think it is worth noting
on Sat, 2008-10-18 20:59.I think it is worth noting here that US minimum wage laws do not apply to freelance/contract work, but only to employer-employee relationships. oDesk is a marketplace that facilitates relationships with contract workers, not the creation of employees, and is extremely careful participate only in legal activity.
Also, I'm proud to say that oDesk is accredited by the BBB.

For taking this provider more seriously than I did. Had I not been such a nudge I would have done exactly the same thing and provided the link to oDesks rating on BBB. Unfortunately - people who threaten the TOS of oDesk and on top of that threaten buyers (and I'm a buyer as well as a provider) really set my teeth on edge.
Thanks for being more professional than I was in my response.

Thanks, 2 fixed rate jobs, and so far I've earned $4 on one, and nothing on the other since I haven't made a sale yet. Still, it's only the beginning.

I'm not sure why I remembered the BBB page, but thanks. If you didn't get that stuff off your chest you'd go around mumbling about it, which makes you look weird (I know).
Is he/she still around, or did he/she get fed up & leave?
Still Here...

Why bother?

If you think it's so terrible, why not try another freelance site or work from home job?
And, can buyers see profiles that are made Private?
Only if they set it to
And, can buyers see profiles that are made Private?
Only if they set it to "Authenticated Users". I can't see the profile, so that means the profile is set to "Private" - only the buyers whose jobs they apply to will be able to see it.

Before you complain about rates, read all 4 parts of the oDesk Insider Blog's Make More Money series.
You can compete
If I can compete, you can compete. I am an American, make between 25-40 dollars per hour here, and do it pretty much full time. I have only a little over 1 year of experience in the industry, and my rates are going nowhere but up. If I can do it, so can you. If you're qualified you'll make what you're worth.
This subject has been about beat to death, so that is all I'm going to say.
