can we use the oDesk tools (work diary) for jobs that are outside oDesk?
Hi,
I work pretty steadily on oDesk, but have a website for my services also. I was wondering if there is a way to use the oDesk work diary to show work done on outside jobs (jobs that were not received through oDesk)? It would make it easier to verify time spent on the assignment and for billing.
Thanks,
Tamara
thanks
thanks chris. I wouldn't want to do anything that oDesk would frown on. the only reason i even asked was I seem to remember reading that some companies that are not actually using oDesk providers are using the services of oDesk to manage their own teams. Just wondered if that was also an option on our end.
I'll check out the project management sites. Do you or anyone know of a good one that I can put on my desktop that I won't have to fear downloading? Have had trouble recently with malware - computer just recovering from major crash.

Here's one
if you go to WR Time Tracker you don't have to download anything. While it doesn't do screen shots it does a nice job of 'logging in' and 'logging out' of projects (self logged) and calculating hours.
Like you I have a few clients outside of oDesk and this system allows me to generate invoices and charge right up to the 'last minute' as it were. It also stores information for later reference - you can add staff members, add projects, etc.

have question about WR Time Tracker
Hi Doreen, thanks for the info. I used it to log time this week. But when I tried to make a report, I didn't find a way to show how much I charge per hour. The invoice shows the total hours worked, but the amount owed is $0 because I didn't enter the hourly rate. Did I miss something?

When you originally set up the account you would need to add the client name in and add a $ per hour rate to that client. To correct this one you can manually edit the report (i.e. pull into word or into excel) but if you go back and set up XYZ as a 'user' then you can add a rate in there!

While yes, oDesk would
on Sun, 2008-11-16 16:12.While yes, oDesk would prefer all your work be done with our marketplace's buyers, what you describe is not against the rules. Moving a relationship from oDesk outside the system is a violation. But it is fine to use our tools the way you describe.
If you create a team, you can log time to it not attached to any assignment. The only feature available without an assignment is the team room. That means the work diary, SVN, and Bugzilla will work, but the time will not appear in your weekly work activity log, and you obviously don't get to use the billing system! When you log personal time, just use your own Team's ID instead of one from an oDesk assignment.
I recommend that when you fill out the create team form you choose buyer company (to avoid turning yourself into an affiliated contractor), then remove your hiring manager privileges in the team admin roster. Be sure to leave the 'team room access' box checked. (The create team button is on the far right in My oDesk under Profile & Settings)
Let me know if you have any questions!

Probably wouldn't be a good idea
I am sure that Odesk would frown on that! There is open source software available for project management that you could install on a folder or subdomain of your website. If your host has fantastico, it will install it for you on your server. It is pretty involved and has time logging as part of the package.
