How does this work for taxes?
My husband and I are trying to figure out how I can do my taxes as a freelance provider? Can you tell me how this works, especially in regards to paying taxes ect?
Sorry if this seems like a stupid question.
Thanks!
In Canada
I should have mentioned I'm in Canada. Thanks Doreen!
Sorry!
I should have looked at your profile. Regardless of where you are you're still a contractor and will still receive payments as an independent person and will be responsible for your own taxes. You'll receive a 1099 form for your income at oDesk (remember you don't work for oDesk you work for the individual buyers and oDesk is merely the conduit for that). You can review information at the Canadian Revenue Agency that applies to you! Doreen
Actually, only US providers
on Mon, 2008-11-17 14:52.Actually, only US providers get a 1099 from oDesk (it's an IRS form).
But all your earnings info is in Billing and Payments. Just select all credits from Jan 1 to Dec 31 to get a printable and exportable report of all your income.
Taxes for freelancers are often more complicated than for traditional employees. So you may need to consult a local tax pro to make sure you're doing everything correctly.

Thank you Jacqui and Doreen!
Not a stupid question
Assuming you live in the US (well this part doesn't matter where you live) you'll receive a 1099 for your income. You have to pay your own taxes. You can read more about self employed income taxes at the IRS page here! You're considered an Independent Contractor (that is a link to definitions by IRS). Doreen
