apparent discrepancy between amount charged per hour and amount actually received
I was looking through other user profiles, trying to find a good hourly rate based on providers with similar skills to mine. I came across one who charges $22.22 per hour. Under his "Recent Work History and Feedback," I noticed that he is working on a job in progress and has earned $167 so far for working for "43 hours @ $3.89." Are there any possible explanations for this massive discrepancy between his posted hourly rate and paid hourly rate? Is oDesk, or any other entity that oDesk is affiliated with, receiving any income from this provider's paid hourly rate that is causing this extremely low pay rate?
The $22.22 per hour is
The $22.22 per hour is provider's posted rate in the yellow right hand portion of the profile, correct? If so, that's filled in by the provider, or the affiliated contractor's staffing manager. It is not calculated based on the actual rate earned. Actual assignments could be at a higher or lower rate. The buyer is this case is paying 3.89/hour. For full disclosure, oDesk keeps 10% of the assignment rates you see on provider profiles.
You have the opportunity to enter a rate (to which oDesk adds their fee) every time you apply to a job - it doesn't have to be the same as your posted profile rate. But most people do apply at (or at least very near) their profile rate.
Personally, I have a satisfactory workload, so I keep my profile rate set at the level I would need to take on a new job.
