Spam Cover Letters
I am new to this site. Hi, Everyone!
I got an email saying that the reason that I was rejected was, "Spam application -- recycled cover letter - null."
I think that this assumption is unfair. I worked hard on that letter... parts of it, such as my availability and my writing sample, were similar to other letters that I sent, but it was definitely tailored to that opening.
Now that I've ranted, can anyone offer me some advise as to how I can avoid this in the future? Also, if you could offer a critique of my profile (http://www.odesk.com/users/~~87a1ff562532a82a), that would be really sweet of you.
Thank you!
Sincerely,
Melissa Franklin
I'm no buyer...
...so I don't know how quickly the buyers can access this rejection method, but painfully I have seen so many complaint about the subject, so, your not alone in going through this kind of rejection, heads up, the next thing you knew, I am the one complaining about it.
No Panic
Hi Melissa,
First of all, don't worry too much about the spam thing. Buyers often have a load of applications to wade through and 'batch reject' providers. Don't take it to heart!
Your profile looks pretty solid. The only thing I could suggest is that you concentrate upon one thing, either the graphics or the writing. You have a great creative writing test score, so maybe a few creative pieces in your portfolio would help. This will allow you to make a focused personal statement.
Other than that, keep persevering. You might have to apply to a couple of low paid, fixed price jobs, but you will get the feedback. That is the key to success on ODesk.
Good luck, and let us know how you get on!

Thanks
I can understand that they have a lot of candidates to sift through. I saw a comment about a provider in a post not long ago, complaining that there were too many qualified candidates (which is a wonderful problem to have... thanks, oDesk!)... One can only hope that with some perseverance and lots of feedback from crappier jobs, the rejections for supposed "spam" become less frequent.
Thanks for the advise!
Spam Application response
I also received a similar rejection stating my application was Spam and I did not have the qualifications for the position. Neither was true and I resubmitted to the buyer and posted a question to the help desk. Neither replied so I don't understand how this happens, either.
I'm wondering if this is simply a drop down box choice of reasons that the buyer can select from. Could have been an error on their part. Who knows?
Thanks for sharing so I didn't have to think I was the only one this happened to.
