Frustrating Project
I had my first job with ODESK. It was for a fixed price as I have this as a part time job only. It was a project to rewrite 100 articles. The offer was tempting at $100. I applied for a bid of $90. When I applied for the job, I indicated that I could finish the first 50 articles in 1 week then another 50 articles for the following week. After 4 days, the buyer started demanding and have expressed her frustration as it is taking so long. She even asked me to send 2 to 3 articles at a time. Articles should be 50% original. If it reaches around 47-48%, it's already okay. I made sure all the article are rewritten according to her standards but I also considered the fact that I gave her the timeline I could deliver the project. After exactly a week, I sent her the completed file. Then she started complaining that the files are not 50%. I apologized and never mentioned her email about her telling me that 47-48% is okay. I checked the files one by one to see which ones are below 50%. I submitted her the file again. Still she kept telling me that they were below 50%. I sent her the original files and told her that the rewritten files need to be compared with the original. I told her that I am willing to send her a screenshot of the file that's below 50% on her end so we could see what's wrong. It seemed to me that she just don't want to pay. She said that it seems that majority of the files are below 50%, which is impossible since I've checked and rechecked all of it. After that, she didn't reply to any of my emails. I checked my application and the listings that she has. She posted a lot of job openings for rewriting articles but only paid four of them. All fixed-price and the largest amount she paid was $55.56. There was one project about rewriting of articles, where the agreed amount was $88.89 and she only paid $15. It's just frustrating because I feel used by this buyer. I was able to meet her requirements and I gave her the timeline I could deliver. I was expecting to proceed with the other 50 articles. It seems to me that she agreed to my timeline by simply hiring me. Although I am not after the money (because I know fixed-price is not a sure thing), i think it is very unprofessional on her side. She didn't even move my interview as an assignment even after I have submitted all her requirements. It's frustrating as it was my first job and knowing that there are buyers like her around here. I'm just afraid about the other job postings she posted. What if others were also hired and they were only used for her advantage. It takes away precious time from the providers end. I believe proper response from the buyer is detrimental in this business. If they are not satisfied with a providers work, they have to inform the buyer that they don't want to pay. This would allow us not to wander. In a providers perspective, we don't want to get negative feedback, so even if it's a fixed-price we still do our job and give it our best. If we are not moved to assignments, there's no way for us to give feedback to the buyer, right?

I have the same experience with someone who has hired me on a fixed project and has agreed that I will submit 50% after 15days and 50% by the 30th day.
He demanded that I submit it 3 articles in a day after a week. I told him that was not part of the agreement. He was rude. I ended the project and make sure that all the sample articles I have sent him I have posted on my site.
Another fixed project has a suspended account. I got two rushed work from that buyer. I have not heard from him for two weeks now. I think it is more advisable that we should demand for an advance payment too.
I also have a per hour project that the buyer keep on changing the scope even as we already have made a black and white list on what needs to be accomplished. He has 3 of my designs. He went off for a month then came back ending the project with all the lies he could put. I had a perfect 5 rating before his assignment. He gave me a 3.
Karma will come to those who cheat. There will always be buyers who are unjust and we get pawned for it. Sad to say, odesk does not have a way for us to rebut and have those negative feedbacks removed.
Until then, I remain to be cautious.

This frustation of yours could have been avoided if you did your due diligence on buyers.

I delivered everything according to what we have agreed and I made sure all standards were met. Now, after 3 days of not answering my emails, she sent me a message today asking if i'm free to do a new batch of rewrites. With no assurance of payment, will you take the new job?

No! Cut your losses and move on. Don't take "fixed" jobs anymore. I've read too many accounts of providers being used and abused via that payment method.
I think it is better to take on jobs that pay less than minimum wage -- although I haven't been hired for anything yet. Build your ratings that way, and then you can raise your fees. At least, that is what other providers have recommended.

Regarding payment, nothing can be done in this situation. However, you can flag the buyer, if possible.
Did you insist the buyer to hire you earlier before you rewrote the first batch of articles? If you did and the buyer wasn't interested in hiring you, report the buyer by submitting a help ticket, as the buyer is only interested in getting things done without officially hiring you (as a provider). Attach as many information as possible such as e-mail correspondence.

wow! that's a nice idea. =) thanks. I replied to her email. I told her to send me the articles that didn't meet her preset standards so I would be able to check where the glitch came from (since I am sure I met all her standards). I am going to ask her to move my "interview" status to "assignment" status before I accept this second batch that she wants me to work on. This would be aside from the fact that I want to prove to her that I did my job well. She didn't send me any message after I've asked her this info.

Since she didn't hire you, she shouldn't have paid you. If she didn't pay you, she doesn't own your rewrites.
Now here's where it gets tricky: Don't do this if you want to get paid by her as any money she gives you will give her an opportunity to provide feedback. Simply let her know that since she didn't pay you the rewrites are not hers and then post them on some free web hosting services, as many as you can. That will prevent her from being able to sell them.
If she's not willing to pay providers why should she profit from their work?
