Do you need to verify credit card before you can hire?
A buyer is going to hire me, but he said that oDesk will not let him hire until he verifies his credit card. Is that true? Thanks.

Yes, it's true. As long as the cc is not verified he can't press the "hire"-button.
Anyhow, from my limited experience here:
I advice you to stay away from n00b buyers without any feedback, reliable reputation, etc ... especially when their cc is not verified! (it would be anyhow against Odesk policies to agree to be paid outside of the Odesk system)
And please don't fall for lame explanations like the job needs to be done very urgently, but to verify the cc will take a couple of days...
At the end it's your choice, but there are just too many crooks out there, trying to make you work for free!!!

Verification can often be done in just a few hours if the buyer will call their credit card company to confirm the amount of the verification charges. Definitely do not start work until the buyer is verified - they have no way to pay you until they verify!
Note that if this is a fixed-price job, even payment from verified buyers isn't guaranteed.
