Minimum rate - Doubts and suggestions

I am happy to see odesk introduced a minimum rate ,But still it affects only the job post & rate preferences,Buyers can still hire for 1$ or less( I am not saying about this part now ) .
My points
1)According to this change buyers can only set the maximum rate preference on job post as 3$ , but i noticed some buyers now indicates in job description that they are looking for providers under 1$ or 2$

From a job posted 1 days back after odesk introduced minimum rates

Quote:

P.S. Please answer this project only with bids below $2/hour.

Funny that its not a data entry job but a java project u can see this job posting if u search the recent java projects posted Wink

These Buyers never sets the preferred rate in job posting , Its optional for buyers to select that .For fixed jobs the new change is working perfect but for hourly ones its still a problem
....................................................................

I have some more suggestion ,I don't know whether its applicable or not
What about odesk set the minimum rate for hiring as 2 or 3 $ ?

waiting for more good suggestions !

I am totally against this new

I am totally against this new action that Odesk has taken.

This will leave many Odesk buyers from "3rd world countries" out of the system.

I know that you being a provider, it may sound tempting to know that there is now a minimum wage. What will, happen as in any economy, is that will be far less job postings, and it will be much harder for providers to get hired. I think Odesk idea of regularing the oeConomy is terrible idea and that it should let the market autregulate itself: we are a global community with multiple curreciences.

Providers: you would like "minimum rate"? Set it up yourself. Simply do not accept jobs that pay less than certain amount and prove to your buyers that you are worth hiring. Everyone can set his "own" minimum rate.

(I usually hire people that work with rates similar to what I can find in my country, but in some occasions I have hired people that were much more expensive because they had the skills that were needed. A provider should set his own rate according to his expertise and experience.)

However, ENFORCING a minimum rates means that BUYERS from third world countries, like myself, will have to look for other places to find providers.

Odesk, please take back this action, so buyers like me can still keep using your site across all our tasks.

Odesk, please take back this action

"what about making the minimum hiring rate for providers who have completed 500 or 1000 hours with good feedback little higher than newbies like 4$ and for newbies as 2$ ?" (QUOTE FROM ABOVE)

That does not make sense to be enforced. Why do you think there are providers that charge high rates per hour and still get employed? Because they can show that they have the expertise, skills, and experience to the buyers that interview them.

Hours don't mean a thing.

There is no need to "track number" of hours or ratings, and then ENFORCE an hourly rate. Buyers can tell how much they should pay a provider, NOT based on the number of hours worked, but based on the expected quality output (portfolio, samples, feedback and ratings from previous jobs, and test work on small tasks before starting big projects) . Providers should decide what their hourly rate should be according to their expertise and experiene - not based on an enforcement- and be able to PROVE that they are worth that, to the buyers. It is the market that sets the price.

Regulating the oEconomy is a terrible idea, as it will leave BUYERS from "third world" countires like myself, to have to look other places to find providers.

Odesk, please take back this action, so buyers like me can still keep using your site across all our tasks.

im happy they did this, u are

im happy they did this, u are simply to ignorant to understand the reason why... let alone discuss the positive which trumps above the negative by introducing this change. If you want to work for 1 usd / hour, please find another job, that is ur problem, not odesk...

Actually, this decision was

Actually, this decision was no less made because of multiple circumstances.
For example, did you ever work with a banking, credit card system? The answer is definitely - yes. Then why ask why there is a minimum rate?
1st: Most bank transactions cost 2$ and verification costs 1$.
2nd: The percent of gained profit for oDesk from a job that pays less then 5$ is simply hilarious!
Conclusion - nobody wins from low rate jobs - only the byer. There are 3 parties involved in the oDesk job market, and 2 of them agree that rates lower then 5$ are not worth it!
And please, leave the grumpy comments about how oDesk is choking you. Every! Every! Successful freelance market starts sorting out their jobs and providers sooner or later - there are a handful of angry people but for the most part everyone gains from such improvements. If you think setting a minimum is torture then try Elance - you will return to oDesk in no time!
The rules here are a golden middle between free services and quality, trust me I've seen a lot of freelance websites.
