Hi Lamatakruri,
I note that your hourly rate is $10.00. That being said...ongoing discussions in here for the past two or three years have been about how - in some countries a rate of a dollar an hour works. In most countries it doesn't. And Buyers KNOW that they can get their job done for a couple of bucks (or whatever currency the Provider works in) and therefore they don't have to pay $10 - $15 dollars (or whatever) an hour.
For every 10 jobs I apply to, I get 9 rejections. It's like trying to publish a book. Be sure to read the emails you get fully, though, because a lot of the openings just expire. (and I think this, a lot of the time, is due to Buyers being overwhelmed with 200 applicants and they just don't have the time to go through that many to pick out a few who might qualify for their job)
If it's not a case of the opening expiring, but rather the reason the candidacy ends is because your "Rate/Bid Too High" - like most of mine...then you have the option of lowering your rate on your profile ...OR bidding way below what you know the job is worth - or more importantly, what YOU are worth.
I have a university degree ...my major is English. My native tongue is English. I am a freelance writer and ENGLISH is what I do...and I'm good at it. Yes, I'm patting myself on the back...thank you. I also have an associate degree (2 yrs) in Graphic Design, but my training and skills are so outdated that a newly graduated graphic artist could most likely runs circles around me. That being said - I know what I know and that degree has also served me in a secondary way with jobs I've landed here.
Your profile is good (compared to some I've seen in here) But you might want to take another look at your overview section. I've copied and pasted it here in order to give a couple of suggestions....
"Graphic design is my passion , so I have worked hard to develop my skills to be able to design miscellaneous print and web products.
I'm seeking opportunities to design logos , print packages, magazines, books and web interfaces.
I have 5 years experience in designing using photoshop , illustrator and indesign , I can draw also .
my main objective is to make from every project a wonderful experience for me and my client. "
My suggestions:
1. If you have schooling in Graphic Design - list it, as well as any other pertinent education you may have. Also list any and all skills you possess. (for instance - maybe you are also good at animation and maybe the Buyer has a project coming up where he/she could use you for that)
2. Watch your English (sorry, can't help it) The last line in your overview...first of all, there is - no capital M on My - and to reword it in correct grammar it would read "My main objective is to make every project a good experience for my client." (your client is not going to care if it's a good experience for you - just that you get the job done when and how you agree you will get it done when you are hired". That is not to say that your Buyer won't take your needs, etc. into consideration, but this is more about how you put yourself out there...and the wording in your
3. Don't accept jobs where Buyers are unwilling to pay you what you are worth. Bottom line. You have good feedback from most of your Buyers, and that counts for a lot in the freelance world.
Personally I don't even bid on Fixed Rate projects. I got nailed big time when I first started on oDesk three years ago. Try to look for hourly rate jobs and look for Buyers who are seeking ongoing and more long term Providers. You just might luck into full time work with flexible hours, a decent pay rate, and a job you really enjoy, as I did.
Good luck to you and I hope this has helped a bit. Didn't mean to be so long winded.....but that's just me!
