How to give a refund

Only the provider (or staffing manager) can give a refund on an assignment. It is possible to give refunds on active and ended assignments.

You may choose to give a buyer a full refund to remove the assignment and any associated comments from your public work history. Any feedback they left you would no longer count in your feedback score calculation because it would be weighted as zero dollars. The assignment would still be accessible as ended on the My Assignments page.

When you submit a refund:

  • An email notification that includes your Comment will be sent to the buyer
  • Your refund will be deducted from any earnings that are pending from last week, and your Buyer's weekly charge will be reduced accordingly
  • If the refund exceeds that amount, it will be deducted from your current account balance immediately, and your Buyer will receive the funds in six days

1. Go to My oDesk -> Get Hired -> My Assignments.






2. Click the 'View' link in the Actions column next to the the correct job. Don't see the job your looking for? Make sure you've selected All in the Status drop-down menu.




3. Click the Give Refund button on the Assignment Details page. If this is an ended assignment, Give Refund will be the only button you see.


4. On an hourly assignment, you may give a refund for a specific number of hours or a dollar amount. On a fixed price assignment, you may give a refund only for a specific dollar amount. Note that the oDesk fee originally paid by the buyer will be refunded in addition to the amount you specify. The oDesk Service Fee is always 10% of the total was charged to the buyer.


5. Choose ONE of the following options:

  • To send a message to the buyer along with the refund, enter some text in the Comment field.
  • To add text to the refund for your own record keeping (not sent to the buyer), enter some text in the Note field.
  • Leave both the Comment and Note fields blank and no text will be attached to your refund.

6. Press the Give Refund button at the top or bottom of the 'Give Refund' box to apply your changes.
