Rate Changes

As a relationship grows and changes within an assignment, it's often appropriate to change the pay rate. The provider may have earned a raise or a change of circumstances could mean the rate needs to be lowered. Just remember, only the provider can lower the assignment's rate and only the buyer can raise it. If you want to make a one-time payment on an hourly job (for great work, reaching a goal, etc.) you may want to consider simply submitting an extra payment.
The buyer can give a raise on any active assignment. The change can be as small or as large as you wish. If your provider is doing an exceptionally good job, you may also want to consider giving him or her a bonus.
- Go to My Jobs > Assignments. Select the Active tab.
- Find the correct assignment in the list. Click the Title in the Assignment column.
- Click the increase rate link in the Terms section of the assignment details page.
- Enter the New Pay Rate. This is the rate the provider will receive. The form will calculate and add the oDesk fee on top of this rate. Check the total New Charge Rate, which is the rate the buyer will see. Adjust the rate you entered as needed.
- When you're ready, click the Increase Rate button. This cannot be undone unless the provider chooses to lower the rate.
Giving a raise will create a new assignment. That means you'll have the opportunity to leave and receive feedback. So giving a raise (even if it's just a small one) is a quick and easy way to automatically end an assignment and rehire the provider. Many happy buyers do this to leave intermediate feedback on an on-going assignments.
The provider can lower the rate on any active assignment. The change can be as small or as large as you wish.
- Go to My Jobs > Assignments. Select the Active tab. li>Find the correct assignment in the list. Click the Title in the Assignment column.
- Click the decrease rate link in the Terms section of the assignment details page.
- Enter the New Pay Rate. This is the rate you will receive. The form will calculate and add the oDesk fee on top of this rate. Check the total New Charge Rate. Adjust the rate you entered as needed.
- When you're ready, click the Decrease Rate button. This cannot be undone unless the buyer chooses to raise the rate.
Lowering the rate will create a new assignment. So you'll have the opportunity to leave and receive feedback.
Staffing managers and affiliated contractors both have the ability to lower assignment rates. The directions are the same for both types of users.
Changing an assignment's rate creates a new financial relationship (similar to changing the weekly limit). But it's a much more significant event. Therefore, we end the current assignment and start a new one automatically (the job description and title will be identical). There are few things you need to know:
- The new assignment starts that night at 00:00 midnight UTC. Hours logged until then will be in the current work diary and billed at the current rate.
- When the old assignment ends, the work diary is locked. The provider will not be able to make any corrections to the ended assignment's hours.
- The current assignment's hours won't count against the new assignment's weekly limit. Both of you need to be especially mindful about how many hours are being logged during the transition week so the provider doesn't log more total hours than expected.
- You can and should both go back to My Jobs > Assignments after 00:00 midnight UTC (or within 14 days) to leave feedback.
oDesk recommends changing rates on Sunday (UTC time) so the new financial relationship and work week will start at the same time.
There's no 'Change Terms' option on the Assignments page. If, when and how much to pay is at the buyer's discretion on fixed-price assignments. Therefore changing the assignment's listed terms isn't necessary. The buyer can already pay more or less than the listed amount. You're always welcome to renegotiate the payment terms. But there's no need to inform oDesk if you discuss and agree to a change. Feedback is weighted by Dollars paid, therefore if the buyer pays more than originally planned, the provider will receive feedback credit for the extra money earned.
If you want to officially reflect a change in payment terms in the system you'll need to end the current assignment and rehire in a new one.
Would you like to change to hourly terms to take advantage of the oDesk guarantee and automatic weekly billing? If so, the buyer has the option to convert any active, fixed-price assignment to hourly. Please see switch to hourly for instructions.
