oDesk is designed to connect Buyers seeking to augment their staff with qualified, professional Providers offering their services in seven key categories:

If you're ready to get started as Buyer, you can post your jobs for free and start searching for Providers right away. Invite them to interview, and review the other candidates who apply to your job listing. Interview and hire as many candidates as you need. Most jobs are filled within a few days.
If you're ready to get started as a Provider, fill out your profile, and then start searching for job assignments. If you're qualified, click 'Apply', write a cover letter, and place a bid. You can interview with Buyers via chat or VOIP. If all goes well you'll be hired and starting on your first assignment soon. Feel free to accept multiple job assignments if you can handle the increased workload.

Once you've made a connection, you'll work in geographically-distributed teams. Buyers can collaborate with team members using a host of tools provided by oDesk, including screensnaps and desktop-sharing. Optional tools are provided for chat communication, a source code repository, Subversion (SVN), and a task or bug tracking system, Bugzilla. Using these tools can help a distributed team thrive and reach a high level of productivity.
Providers are required to log their time through a downloadable client application, oDesk Team, which logs screenshots, activity, and memos for all working hours. This enables a seamless and convenient way for Buyers to review the work and stay on top of progress through the web-based WorkDiary, which displays the daily work in a simple "filmstrip-like" interface.

The time logs and WorkDiary together create an efficient, automated billing and payment system for work that is the *only* verified system for time-based work online. Providers are guaranteed payment when they log hourly assignments using the oDesk Team client. Buyers may even award their Providers bonuses for outstanding work.
