Posting a Job Opening

Any user with hiring manager privileges can post a job. The job opening should explain what the job will be, your timeframe, and the skills you require. Most openings receive 10-20 applications from oDesk Providers within 24 hours. This help page will walk you through creating a new job opening.

Important Note: DO NOT post or request contact info (email, chat, phone) anywhere in your job opening (description, attachment, message board) — it's a violation of oDesk Policy.

Posting a Job Opening

Follow the steps below to post a job opening on oDesk:

1. Log in using your oDesk user ID and password.

2. Go to My oDesk -> Hire -> Post a New Job.

3. If you have hiring privileges for multiple teams, select the team this job will be part of. If you don't want this job to be a part of any of your current teams, read this article and then click the Create a New Team button.

4. Post your job opening in four simple steps.

DO NOT post or request contact info (email, chat, phone) anywhere in your job opening (description, attachment, message board) — it's a violation of oDesk Policy.

  1. Describe your Job
    • Job Title
    • Category and Subcategory
    • Skills
    • Description:
Give as much information about your opening as possible; detailed openings attract better candidates. Indicate required skills such as programming languages, operating systems, vertical industries, and software proficiency, as well as the estimated hours per week and years of experience desired.
Ask specific questions for providers to answer in their cover letters. Reject candidates that don't follow your directions.
    • Attach a related file
  2. Hourly or Fixed-Price?
    • Please read this article to help you decide which you should choose.
    • Hourly
Requires you to provide an estimated state date, estimated duration (in weeks), and estimated workload. These are just estimates; you have total flexibility to start on a different date, keep the assignment active for as long as you want (after you've made a hire), and set the provider's weekly limit as high or as low as you need.
    • Fixed Price
Requires you to provide an estimated state date, estimated end date, and budget. These are flexible, just like for hourly jobs. Note that providers can bid above or below listed budget. If you find it hard to estimate the cost, you may want to post an hourly job.
  3. Preferred Qualifications
    • Check the box to request a specific feedback score, min/max hourly rate, location, oDesk skill test passed, portfolio, English level (self-assessed), and/or oDesk hours logged.
    • Providers may still apply if they do not meet your preferences, but will be notified that they do not meet some of your criteria.
    • The form will show you how many providers in our database match your criteria, and you'll have a link to that list of matching providers from your list of candidates.
  4. Posting Options
    • Buyer Profile Visibility
Changing this setting will affect all your Company's posts. Click here to learn more about your buyer company profile
    • Job visibility
Public jobs are visible to anyone who visits oDesk.com. Uncheck the box if you don't want your job post indexed by search engines.
Private jobs do not appear in oDesk 'find jobs' searches - finding candidates is up to you.

5. Once you are done entering the information click the Post this Job Opening button at the bottom of the form.
