How to add samples to your portfolio

Your portfolio allows you to show off samples of past work. A good portfolio is crucial to establishing your credibility. Projects displayed may be personal or professional. Be sure to detail your role in the creation of any item you display, especially on collaborative efforts.

If you do not have any samples or cannot show work from previous jobs for confidentiality reasons, you should consider devoting some time to open source projects or volunteering your services to a nonprofit organization to help build your portfolio.

You may update your portfolio at any time.

1. Go to My oDesk -> Profile & Settings -> My Provider Profile.

2. Press the Add or Edit button in the 'Portfolio Projects' box.

3. Enter a Project Title, Category, and Sub-Category. Press the calendar buttons to select the (approximate) Date of the project.

Optional, but strongly recommended:

  • Upload an Image to display next to the portfolio item by pressing the browse button and uploading the .jpg, .jpeg, .gif, or .png file. Show off a project not originally in one of these image formats by taking a ScreenSnap.
  • Upload an Attachment for buyers to download by pressing the browse button and uploading a .doc, .swf, or .pdf file. You may convert nearly any type of project to .pdf file using a scanner or print to PDF service.
  • Write a Project Description detailing the project format, purpose, and your role in its creation. Clearly state if you were only responsible for a portion of the item on display (just the images, written content, or coding, for example). Explain whom the project was for, software and skills used in its creation, whether you worked with a team, etc.
  • Enter a Project URL where buyers can visit the project on the web. Link to the project's original page, or to your own personal portfolio site. You may want to use ShortURL feature in oDesk Team if the URL is long.

4. Press the Save button at the top or bottom of the 'Portfolio Projects' box to apply your changes. Press the Save and Add More button to add this item to your portfolio and reopen the form to add another item.
