Freelancing on oDesk

Welcome Independent Contractors!

As a Independent Contractor on oDesk, you have access to thousands of job openings posted by companies around the world. It doesn't matter where you live - you work virtually through the oDesk platform.

oDesk Buyers can post jobs on an hourly or a fixed price basis. For hourly jobs, you track your time using oDesk Team, and oDesk guarantees payment (via the withdrawal method of your choice) for hours worked.

All oDesk providers must pass the oDesk Readiness Test. You cannot apply to job openings unless you are oDesk Ready. This open book test is designed as a tutorial to help familiarize users with oDesk policies and practices. (effective June 4, 2008)

Can I be successful as an oDesk Provider?

There are a few things that every oDesk Provider should have:

  • A quality resume (relevant work experience, experience with remote working, solid education)
  • Tech-savvy & comfortable working remotely over the internet
  • Good knowledge of the English language and overall communication skills
  • Internet Access (Broadband recommended)

How do I get paid?

Each week, your earnings go into your oDesk account, and you can withdraw them whenever you choose.

oDesk supports several different withdrawal methods, including PayPal, Moneybookers, wire transfer, and the oDesk Debit MasterCard, powered by Payoneer. US-based Providers can also transfer their earnings to a US bank account via ACH.

How do I become an oDesk Provider? Is it free?

Creating an oDesk account is completely free! You will enter your personal information and create a Provider Profile. Then you can start applying to jobs and earning money on oDesk.

What if I am already an oDesk Buyer or team member? Can I become a Freelance Provider?

Absolutely. Go to the My Provider Profile tab under Profile & Settings. You will be able to create a Provider Profile, and a new financial account will be created for your freelance earnings.
