Using the oDesk Screensnap tool

If any team member wishes to show other team members a snapshot of their computer screen, ScreenSnap is the best tool to use. With a few clicks, you can capture an image on your computer screen, and place it on a specially created, dedicated web page with a unique URL for your colleagues to review. The URL is put on your Clipboard as the ScreenSnap is captured so you can paste it into an email or an instant message and send it to your colleagues.

 


Capturing a screen image with ScreenSnap

To capture the screen,

  1. Login to oDesk Team
  2. Press the default hot key Control-Alt-S OR right-click on the oDesk Team icon in the icon tray and select Screensnap
  3. A window will pop up with a thumbnail of the screensnap.
  4. Optionally enter a Title and/or Description for the screensnap
  5. Select the appropriate Permission option
  6. Click Draw to annotate your screensnap before sharing it
  7. Save to later share the screensnap or Discard if you don't like the image.  

Reviewing the ScreenSnap image

  1. Click on the thumbnail of the screen image captured 
  2. The image is then displayed on your monitor in its own window, bordered in green
  3. Press the Escape to quit the preview.

Drawing on the Screensnap

You can annotate your screensnap using standard graphic tools.  For example, if you want to point out some text to move on a document (eg https://url.odesk.com/d9wq), or call attention to a graphical element on a ScreenSnap (eg https://url.odesk.com/q0nh),

To draw on your ScreenSnap:

  1. Click the Draw button on the window that pops up
  2. Click and hold the LEFT mouse button to draw in free-form
  3. Click the RIGHT mouse button to bring up a menu you can use to add other graphic elements.
  4. At any time you can press F1 on your keyboard to bring up a Help screen with a short description and Hot keys.
  5. Once done with your drawing, press Escape to save the changes and return to the thumbnail window.
  6. You can use Control-Z at any time to undo changes.



Sharing Screensnaps

To share the ScreenSnap image, along with any title or description information:

  1. Click the Save button in the ScreenSnap dialog box
  2. Uploading progress bar will appear. During the upload process:
    • oDesk Team sends your image to the oDesk Server
    • oDesk Server creates a web page for your ScreenSnap image
    • oDesk Team Client places the URL location into your Clipboard
  3. Once the upload is complete, a pop-up notification window will appear.  
  4. Paste the URL using Control-V into an IM or email. The recepients will be able to view your image via their own browser.

Viewing previous screensnaps

Any screen snaps that you or your team members have captured are kept on secure oDesk servers.

You can view the complete history of screen snaps at any time in your team room by clicking on the Resource List icon under each team member’s thumbnail, or by clicking the link in the upper right. On the resource list page, you will be able to view all screen snaps captured by your whole team or by any individual team member.

You can see your list of recent ScreenSnaps at any time by choosing the "Recent ScreenSnaps..." option from the oDesk Team SysTray.  To delete a ScreenSnap or change the access permissions, select the "Browse..." option from the Recent ScreenSnaps window.
