The best writing is precise, concise, accurate, and accessible to a non-specialist. I am a native English speaker with extensive editing and writing experience. I am comfortable writing about anything in science or commerce, and specialize in the natural sciences, medicine, psychology, history, and the social sciences. Cryptocurrency has become a subspecialty of mine. I can edit and write about any topic. As a retired professor with a Ph.D., I have published over 70 papers. Forty of those papers have been cited at least 40 times! You can see all my work on Google Scholar, linked on my portfolio. For 15 years, I was an associate editor of "Systematic Biology", one of the highest impact journals in science. I guided many doctoral dissertations to successful completion and was head of admissions in my department. I have a strong record in writing proposals and have been awarded seven NSF grants. I have years of experience in teaching as well, with demonstrated success at primary, secondary, undergraduate and graduate levels. This experience has provided skills in explaining things to any targeted audience, from 5 year-olds to professors. Just because I am capable of writing highly complex technical stuff does not mean that I cannot communicate to a general audience. Please do not invite me to interview for fixed-price jobs. I prefer hourly rates so that I can offer you meticulous service, without rushing. I have extensive professional writing experience with major internet publishers. If you need engaging prose, backed with solid research skills and sound SEO instincts, I can convey your message. I have written hundreds of blog posts, magazine-length articles, newsletters, press releases, business letters, and even an audiobook. My background is in journalism, and I was trained to work accurately and efficiently and to never consider missing a deadline. I endeavor to submit clean copy that is ready to publish without major edits required on your end. My professional experience online goes back to being one of the first free-lance editors for Amazon.com in its earliest years. I later created a history site for IAC’s Dotdash (formerly About.com) and wrote and maintained it for a dozen years. I developed a specialty in recent years of writing about history, but I’ve written about all sorts of subjects, ranging from (long ago) coverage of punk bands to (much more recently) B2B business blogs.

I am a tertiary-trained (native-speaking) writer, editor and writing coach across genres, including non-fiction, fiction, memoir and biography, business, content, children's and young adult literature. I am trained and skilled in both British and American grammar styles; I am always responsive to messages and feedback, and I never miss a deadline as this recent Upwork feedback attests: "Margaret is a phenomenal writer who delivers exceptionally final product of the highest quality. More importantly, I have worked with her a few times, and the turnaround is always on-time and with efficiency. Thank you!" More words from clients: (1) Jill Forster, PhD in educational psychology, twenty years as consultant and university lecturer. Published writings include research articles and books: Think about Creativity, Think about Mentoring, Honeyed Ramblings, and Mother of the Child. Margaret very capably edited my now published memoir, Mother of the Child. As a knowledgeable grammarian she was helpful in taking the initiative to recommend layout variations. Her skilful formatting assistance was valuable and throughout the process she remained responsive to the intended nuances in the writing style. (2) Prof. Shirley Randell AO, PhD, Hon.DLitt, FACE, FIML, FAICD, FIPAA Conjoint Professor of Practice, School of Education, Faculty of Education and Arts, University of Newcastle Adjunct Professor, Faculty of Education, University of Canberra I consider Margaret to be an exceptional editor as a committed and engaging writer herself, with the ability to support both amateur and experienced authors and academics. I recommend her for any editing work she is asked to undertake.

I have over 25 years of genealogy research experience. My specialty is in southern states and in slave research. I am very experienced in working on genealogies that are complicated or where records are scarce, such as finding records in often overlooked places. When county records are burned or missing, there are often records at the state level or military records and possibly records in adjoining counties. I have experience working with land documents (county, state, and federal), court documents (including estate records), also tax, military, and census records. I have a program that can plat out land boundaries and add notes and descriptions. I am also experienced in using DNA results to help find clues when few or no documents exist. The more problematic it seems, the more I enjoy solving it! I know where records are located and how to access many types of records that are not available online and that most people are not aware of or wouldn't think to look. I have researched and published a book of records for one of my family surnames. I have also helped index and transcribe records for the LDS, for their genealogy based website familysearch.org. Through the years I have transcribed thousands of deeds, wills, and other records for my personal research and for clients. I have also transcribed some audio interviews.

I write and edit non-fiction content, for both general and academic audiences, including articles, knowledge entries, book writing and editing, course outlines, and biographical profiles. I've written news articles on many topics and have learned there is no subject beyond my ability to research and understand it. Most recently the first of nine books on landmark Supreme Court cases was published, "The Supreme Court and Religion: An assessment and full detail on recent landmark cases" (2021, 375 pp.). For this book I wrote the Introduction, Conclusion and supporting essays about each case. As a former attorney, my legal education, experience, and research skills give me a unique perspective on many issues and the tools to bring that to bear. I've written or edited contracts, correspondence, proposals, and numerous court motions and briefs. I have also published numerous peer-reviewed academic pieces, including book reviews, encyclopedia entries, and journal articles. I've also written critical analyses of qualitative research; a "critical analysis" is a systematic process used to identify the strengths and weakness of a research article in order to assess the usefulness and validity of research findings. Every client I have worked with has praised my work, no one has rated me lower than 4.5 stars. Over 18 months I've worked with 7 clients on 11 jobs: 2 clients aborted the jobs early on; 1 hired me for one job & praised my work; 3 praised my work and hired me again; and 1 hired me & praised my work, but it was too recent to rehire me yet. That is a job success rate of 100%.

Currently on doctoral studies of history, focusing on contemporary history (20th century), but also well-educated on the whole story of the humankind. I gathered a variety of skills need for writing all kinds of papers, essays and other scientific works in humanities and social sciences. I also developed research abilities need for gathering information, facts, and other materials needed for any kind of writing. Besides my knowledge in writing scientific papers, I’m also capable of artistic and creative writing, as I’m an amateur writer of short stories for over 5 years now. That side of writing allowed me to foster my imagination and creative, “outside of the box”, thinking. In the same time, thanks to creative writing, I managed to acquire a fairly developed writing style. With my experience in these two types of writing, I also developed skills needed for proof reading and similar types of work. But also I feel capable of writing any type of material needed, not only bind to two I already mentioned.

Communicating with and navigating through archives can be a daunting and time-consuming task. Never fear though! I have a Master's degree in Holocaust Studies, which brought me into contact with loads of archives. I have helped authors and filmmakers arrange trips to archives and find the material they need to make their projects successful. These visits included media records (moving and still images), textual records and oral history. On one such trip, a filmmaker found an oral history of his great grandfather that he didn't know about that will be included in his film. I have also filed public records requests on behalf of filmmakers. Benefits of hiring an archival producer: Unique media and textual records for your film, The ability to defend your conclusions and beliefs with supporting material, Oppurtunites to show something new, and many more... The majority of archive material has not been digitized. If you want stock images, or other media that hasn't been used regularly or perhaps never been used in a film, you need to visit the archive. Archives are a treasure trove of great media records and audio recordings. If you want a finished project that has unique sources and is original, you need to visit the archive. Textual records encourage you to come to your own conclusions about history. While using already published books or interviews with experts are important, you don't want that to overshadow your own conclusions or beliefs. Archival sources can give you the evidence and confidence you need to defend your position rather than relying on secondary sources. You don't want your film to take someone's work and re-word it. You want your film to reflect you. Archival material gives you the legitimacy do just that. History has an incredibly large depth to it. There are endless possibilities to find material that has yet to be used in a book or another film. If you're investing money, your reputation and your passions on a film, I bet you want to use something new. Be bold and groundbreaking. Searching archives and filing public records requests can provide your film with something brand stinking new. That's the goal! Hiring an archival producer can provide your film with great benefits. If you want to hire me, contact me and we can arrange a free 15 minute consultation to discuss your project needs and my role. I'm currently based in Missoula, MT. I can provide my services remotely and travel to archives in Montana, Wyoming and the Pacific Northwest. If you are an author or researcher, not fluent in German, I can manage orders and inquires. I have contacts in Germany, which we could use to arrange visits to Berliner archives, if required. I have published an ebook "Camaradas: Ode to the Spanish Civil War". It is a translation from German book written by Erich Weinert. I completed the project on my own. I found the copyright holder and gained permission to complete the project. Looking forward to working with you! Ryan Edgar, archival producer, production assistant and archival researcher
