As an Area Manager for Hertz, I was responsible for all off-airport operations west from Beaumont, California, east to El Centro, California, north to Yucca Valley, California and South to the Coachella Valley, including Palm Springs for an area that spans over 150 miles at its furthest points.
As an Area Manager, I was responsible for 4 operating units and therefore had 4 direct-report managers. There are a total of 8 staffed locations.
The Area Manager position is broken down to three areas: Sales, Leadership and Management.
Sales involves person-to-person sales with the customers at time of vehicle rental. As an Area Manager I am responsible for teaching, coaching and monitoring the sales efforts of all employees in my organization. This includes person-to-person instruction as well as group instruction. Additionally, I am responsible for negotiating and implementing contracts and agreements with a variety of partners, including body shops, dealerships, hotels, resorts, fixed base operators, corporations and other entities that have rental car needs.
Leadership includes coaching of employees from the entry-level position of Manager Trainee through the Location Manager level, which includes teaching employees how to manage assets, employees and customers. The training of Location Managers is ongoing, coaching and instructing Location Managers in all processes, procedures, methods and theories involved in both the Hertz business model as well as standard business models.
Management includes the management of an operating unit within the Hertz Corporation. In addition to basic responsibilities such as profitability, asset control, employee management (human resources) and sales, the Area Manager is responsible for expansion of the area, including opening new locations, including negotiating and completing leases and conducting all operations and procedures necessary to create a location.
During this internship I was responsible for installing and configuring a new server on the network and re-configuring the existing as a backup server. Included in this installation was the installation and configuration of Novell Netware 5.1 on the new system and the transfer of existing data from the previous server to the new server.
This is relative to this particular situation in that I was required to submit a paper to the department chair detailing what skills I acquired during this internship and what methods and/or equipment I used.

This particular site was difficult to work because it was created and hosted by Homestead.com's SiteBuilder. When I accessed the files through Homestead, they were encoded, so I couldn't simply download and edit. All the pages had to be cut-and-pasted from the website into HTML files. The code then had to be cleaned up to conform to standard HTML and CSS guidelines.
The following components/actions were taken to complete this project.
Switched all pages to PHP to allow use of PHP includes.
Create standardized, clear menu system. PHP include used to keep menu standard on all pages. Also utilized style sheet for hover effect.
Create extra graphical buttons from existing graphics
Resize, realign and in some instances move existing photos. Also used divisions and tables to create shadow effect.
Reordered text on all pages to make it easier to read. Includes content changes, alignment changes and formatting.
Edited all text for standard grammar, clarity and context.
Installed new contact form, utilizing the CAPTCHA system.
Installed simple PHP authentication script for member's area.
Existing CSS was over complex and included over 50 styles for text. Recreated the style sheet to standardize the fonts, color, size and attributes. This gave the site a uniform look.
Inserted “alt” descriptions in all pictures to conform with SEO standards.
Inserted meta description and meta keyword tags in headers of all pages (previously non-existent). Utilized PHP includes so that client can change.
The original website was clumsy and non-standard. The content was existing, but poorly formatted. We were able to use the existing content and existing graphics and create a simple, engaging, easy-to-read website.
This blog is my creation. It is still a work-in-progress. The template was pre-made, but the content and elements of the blog were created/setup by me.
