Over the last 15 years I have developed a wide range of skills, including PC troubleshooting and repair, Linux server management, call centre operations, and customer service skills; all with a strong focus on small business. Through PLCC, I am looking to work with small to medium businesses that want to grow through excellent customer service. Although PLCC itself is just over 2 years old, we have a combined experience of at least 15 years.

Smaller Solutions
Sole Proprietor / Executive
Smaller Solutions provided cost-effective computer support for local small businesses. By teaching my clients about the benefits of Open Source Software, I was able to save many of them hundreds of dollars in licensing fees, yet maintain full functional software that suit their day-to-day operations.

MRO Software
System Administrator / Independent Contributor
As the System Administrator I was responsible for the maintenance of over 10 QA and Development Sun servers.
Duties included:
Installing and configuring software
Maintaining backups for all servers under my control
Liasing with the System Administrator of the Production system to ensure our environments matched as closely as possible to ensure proper software operation during the transitions from Development to QA to Production
Researching, sourcing, recommending, and installing new software and hardware as needed or required

Faxon Canada/RoweCom Canada
System Administrator / Independent Contributor
While at Faxon Canada (which was bought and sold several times during my time there, eventually ending up as RoweCom Canada at the time of my departure), I started as the evening print spool operator, responsible for printing and sorting the daily reports and maintaining the daily backups. Minor Helpdesk duties were also on the list, such as replacing print ribbons, or troubleshooting PCs and dumb terminals.
Over time I became responsible for:
Novell NetWare server (reorganizing the flat directory structure into users and department, and enacting proper permissions control, eventually upgrading from 3.x to 4.x)
Data General Unix system
General Helpdesk duties for PCs and dumb terminals for local and remote users
Preparing yearly budgetary proposals for IT
Researching, sourcing, recommending, and implementing new software and hardware
Implementing and managing Linux-based webserver
Managing backups for all servers
As part of the MIS team, one of my greatest achievements was the configuration and installation of over 20 desktop systems, replacing existing desktops or dumb terminals, within 18 hours with minimal user disruption.
Other Experience
Toastmasters
From 2002 to 2005 I was a member of a local Toastmasters club.
While a member, I participated in the Toastmasters program, earning my CTM (Competent ToastMaster) designation in just over 6 months, and then my ATM-B (Advanced ToastMaster - Bronze) about a year later. I also served two terms as the club's Vice President Education, responsible for tracking each club member's progress through the Toastmasters program, setting the agenda for each meeting to ensure as many members participated in each meeting role as often as possible, plus other duties.
Through Toastmasters I learned to overcome much of my general shyness, and to speak with more assurance in a variety of situations, from general face-to-face conversations, up to groups of dozens or hundreds of people.
