iSERVE is recognised as the third largest hosting provider in New Zealand, I currently have overall responsibility
for over 300 servers, consisting of approximately 250 Linux servers and 50 Windows servers. I am the senior
technical resource at iSERVE for both networking and systems (storage and servers).
Key achievements :
• I was responsible for the design and implementation of the infrastructure and systems component of
iSERVE's new cloud server/virtual server offering. This platform is built around IBM HS22 Blades & IBM
DS4300 SAN units the Blades run Citrix XenServer 5.5. This new platform is the first in New Zealand to offer
true online provisioning of virtual servers in real-time.
• I was responsible for the design and implementation of the first Windows 2008/IIS7 shared webhosting
environment in New Zealand. This solution was built around IBM x3650 servers running Windows server
2008/IIS7 and Windows 2008/SQL 2008. This platform will be upgraded to Windows 2008 R2 upon release.
• I was responsible for redesigning the network at iSERVE, this involved removing all single points of failure
from the core network and iSERVE's shared services (Web,Mail,DNS and DB). Prior to this redesign the
network had many single points of failure and availability was around the 99.9% mark. Currently the
availability for the redesigned network ifrastructure is 100% for the last 3 months (since project finish).
Day to day duties :
• Designing solutions for existing customers and prospective new customers. This involves working very closely
with the sales force, and acting in a pre-sales consultancy role.
• Patch maintenance of all servers.
• Deployment of new customer equipment.
• Third level technical assistance for all customers.
• Monitoring and maintaining all aspects of the network.
• Systems and Network documentation.
• Secheduling proactive maintenance work on the systems and network.

Groenz Limited
Senior Systems Administratr / Independent Contributor
Groenz is an internationally recognised condiment manufacturer in the food service industry. When I joined
Groenz they were mainly paper based, with approximately five computer users. One of my first tasks at Groenz
was the modernisation of thier ageing computer systems. In my five years at Groenz the company grew from the
inital four users to approximately fifty seats with roughly fifteen of those being remote sites.
Key achievements :
•
I was responsible for the design and implementation of a 50 user VoIP PABX, this equated to roughly $35k/pa
savings for Groenz.
•
I was responsible for the design and implementation of a 15 site WAN, this system was deployed using Cisco
(800/1800/2800 Series) Routers running IPSec. The sites were a mixture of single user sites and branch
offices. The connection technologies ranged from ADSL for the single user sites, to layer 3 ethernet for the
larger offices.
•
I was responsible for the design and implementation of the company business intelligence system, this was
written in PHP due to the requirement that all users be able to access the information - including sales
personnel while on the road.
•
I was responsible for the design and implementation of the companies SAN infrastructure, this was built
using IBM FAStT700 SAN units, Brocade SilkWorm switches and ADIC Tape libraries.
•
I was responsible for the design and implementation of a high availability solution for the company, due to the
company operating 24/7 there was a need that in a disaster there would be zero data loss. The solution I
designed and implemented consisted of servers hosted off site and live replication of all critical data, this was
acheved using Oracle DataGaurd for the ERP system, CA XOSoft WANSync for the Exchnage Server. Non
critical data was also replicated every 2 hours from the file servers using rsync. The system has been called
upon for disaster recovery since I left Groenz and as expected worked flawlessly.
Day to day tasks :
• Desktop support for 50+ users.
• Addition of new users.
• Training of new users.
• Creation of I.T. Department budgets.
• Oversight of one staff member (Junior Systems Administrator).
• Procurement of all I.T. related equipment.
• Vendor management.
• Board reporting.
• Strategic I.T. planning.
• Backup Monitoring.
