Olivier H. - Web, CSS, XHTML, HTML, Javascript, PHP/MySQL, CMS, Tech Support, Linux - Freelance Consultant, Canada

I have been active with the Web since it's opening to the world at large. I built my first web site in 1994 and have been improving ever since. Although I am not an expert in the design area, I know HTML, XHTML, PHP/MySQL and CSS very well. I am also adept at taking a Photoshop document (PSD) or other type of graphical design and turning it into a search engines indexable, standard compliant, user-friendly web site. I am looking for opportunities in the web programming field, either in XHTML,...

CSS 9 yrs 5.0 2008 Although at first I believed CSS would not make it into long-term standards, I am glad I learned it since it is now the de facto way to separate content from presentation/design. I know the key techniques that will allow to model a website into almost anything a client could wish for while still respecting the standards. I also know the tricks needed for true cross-browser integration and can test a site on Internet Explorer 5.5+, Safari, Opera 9 and Firefox 2+.

Here are some sample projects I completed:

HTML 10 yrs 5.0 2008 I began working with HTML before the first WYSIWYG editors were made, back when the standard was what Netscape would accept or not. I learned HTML 3.0 and 4.0 when they became standards and lately became much more interested in XHTML, especially XHTML 1.0 Strict, since it can be read by XML parsers such as phones, PDAs and plenty of other non-computer platforms. All the websites I create are XHTML 1.0 Strict unless stated otherwise by the client.

JavaScript/AJAX 4 yrs 4.0 2008 Several websites using Javascript and/or AJAX technology. The main use of the technology was to interact with the users in a more friendly manner while still maintaining compatibility with all major browsers (Mac and Linux included).

Here are some examples of past work:

PHP/MySQL 6 yrs 5.0 2008 I built several sites and systems using PHP, most of them access-restricted web sites, portals or systems for use on an Intranet. On some projects I was a stand-alone developer while on others I worked as part of a team.

Employment History
From To Company Title/Role Description
03/2007 12/2007 Bug-Tracker Assistant Lead Tester / Team Lead I worked first as a software/game tester and then as an assistant Lead Tester/Lead Tester for Bug-Tracker (http://www.bug-tracker.com) for almost a year. This company specializes in software QA, having contracts with software developers from around the world. Their focus is on quality bugs and description, as well as curteous communication with the client. At a certain point I had two teams totalling 8 employees under my supervision and I was managing 3 projects at the same time. This job enabled me to:
+ Think outside the box. Doing QA means thinking about unconventional approach.
+ Multi-task effectively.
+ Get a good sense of priorities, since I had to juggle with several tasks, people and projects all at once.

Given the nature of the business, I am not at liberty to discuss the projects I completed while under employment however I can say that I worked on big software titles including AAA games.
10/2005 07/2007 Protech Powder Ltd. Computer Specialist / Independent Contributor Protech Powder Ltd. (http://www.protechpowder.com/index.html) is a company specialized in powder coatings for the industry. Since their focus was not on computers but on powder coatings production, the IT team was pretty small and included the IT manager, myself and another exterior consultant. My tasks included:

+ Update the web site (http://www.protechpowder.com/index.html)

+ Install and manage a Drupal (CMS) site for communication with business partners and employees (http://forum.protechpowder.com/)
+ Find, diagnose and fix computer problems for employees.
+ Manage, extend and improve the network
+ Manage the servers

This was all done in a multi-office environment, the company having offices in Montreal, Toronto (Canada) and plants in Brazil, New Jersey, Toronto as well as several salesmen across the world.
Education
From To School Degree Area of Study Description
09/2002 04/2005 University of Montreal Bachelors East Asian Studies Although not directly related to computer sciences, this program opened my eyes to the world and to the many different points of view that exist in it. The courses included Language (Japanese), Geography, History, Economics, Sociology and Culture classes.  This field of study encouraged me to change the way I envisioned multi-language. If before I included mainly European languages in a multi-language setting I am now able to incorporate Asian languages and even right-to-left languages in Unicode stand-alone or web applications.
09/1996 05/2000 College Bois-de-Boulogne Bachelors Computer Science The courses allowed students to specialize in networking or programming, or, like me, to learn and be fully proficient in both. Courses included Networking and Communication, C++ Programming, Web Programming, Computer Maintenance and Repair and Software Analysis.

  • Project Title: Vidlift online video conversion system
  • Attachment: none
  • Completed: 07/07/2008
  • Category: Web Development > Web Programming
  • URL: http://www.vidlift.com
  • Description: Using a widely known open-source video conversion tool as my base, I was to develop a PHP API to interact with the tool and get output from it. I created the whole backend for the software in Object Oriented PHP (OOPHP) and this allowed clients, using PHP or another language, to connect to the system using an API key and add, remove or otherwise modify conversion jobs. The system would also get conversion results back from the tool and output them to the user in a display friendly format.
