This is a short story I wrote which grew out of a writing exercise at the 2006 Master Class on writing genre fiction at V-Con in Vancouver BC. The purpose of the exercise was to illustrate character and setting through active description and the opening was very well received by the instructors who included Barbara Hambly, Alma Alexander, and Matt Hughes.
