Freelance writing jobs grew 500% in past year, according to oDesk

Menlo Park, CA — April 15, 2009 — oDesk released data showing freelance writers enjoyed 500 percent demand growth in the past year for their skills. Freelance writing jobs include: technical writing, business writing, blog and article writing, editing and translation services. oDesk data is drawn from thousands of small to medium-sized businesses that use its platform to hire, manage and pay service professionals around the world.
Over the last year, the number of freelance writing jobs on oDesk, the leading marketplace for online workteams, grew more than 500 percent, from 200 to more than 1,000 jobs posted per month. There are currently 390 open writing jobs, and average job sizes on the oDesk network are greater than $4,000. Competing for these contract writing opportunities are about 20,000 providers. Highest paid are Canadian writers, who earn an average of $13.68/hour. U.S. writers, who make up more than 50 percent of writers on oDesk, charge an average of $11.31/hour. All of these freelance writers work at home and set their own rates and hours.
