All Things oDesk
December 18, 2013 by Gary Swart

We’re excited! Today we’re announcing that we’ve signed an agreement to merge with Elance.

First things first: we’ll continue to serve you on odesk.com, and Elance customers will continue to work on elance.com. In other words, oDesk and Elance will operate separately and as usual, even after the merger is complete.

Why, then, are we putting the two companies together?

The answer is pretty simple: we think we can do a better job this way. We are both inspired by a similar vision: to deliver online work experiences that create freedom and boundless opportunity for clients and freelancers everywhere.

The merger has not yet closed, but here are the kinds of things you can look forward to:

Significant technology investments. This includes tools for more successful hiring, seamless online collaboration, better mobile support and freelancer skills development.
Higher quality results. With our combined expertise in engineering and data science, you will enjoy a host of quality improvements, such as superior job and freelancer recommendations over time.
Participation in how we evolve. Please join us in crafting the future together. Email me personally at garyeswart@odesk.com. Tell me your likes, dislikes, suggestions and comments about oDesk — and about Elance if you’ve tried it too. We’ll reflect feedback in future innovations and share back what you’ve taught us in an upcoming blog post.

I also have a personal announcement. I’ve decided that after the merger closes I will step aside and hand the reins of the merged company to Fabio Rosati, Elance’s CEO. I will remain involved as a strategic advisor. We have been spirited business rivals over the years, but I have always respected Fabio. I could not possibly imagine a more dedicated and capable CEO to oversee the merged company. oDesk executive chairman Thomas Layton will also be a leader of the new combined company, continuing his same role.

We’ve prepared a Q&A in case you have more questions. Please note that the closing of the merger, expected to occur in Q1 2014, is subject to the satisfaction of certain closing conditions (including regulatory review and approval). In the meantime, I am so proud of what our community has accomplished and excited to reach new heights by teaming with Elance. You have my promise that we will work harder than ever to make sure that YOU, our customers, partners, team members and friends truly love the way you work!

    Sir/Maam,

I was messaging and making complaint to support team that my account is unsearchable which means client cannot see me when they search for odesk contractors and aside from that before it was unsearchable it shows when searched by my feedback, rates and number of hours cannot be seen also, it become unsearchable and get worsen when i complaint to support that my feedback rate and number of hours wont show when searched. support I think didn’t do something and just reply to me in a scripted way, using ready made response. I have been working for odesk clients since 2010 and it will be very unfair if I suffer with this type of bug and not given the help in which every odesk contractor is entitled to. coz we grow together since then but was left behind now that my account is suffering with errors. this is my ticket number.

    #3751241 my profile is unsearchable

and i will attach a small screencast about the problem in which i also attach to tickets i sent to support team and didnt helped me in response to me they close my complaint ticket and label it as solved even though the problem is not fixed.

Odesk is very very bad service provider,
You can work for short term, but if you think you want to maintain your profile for long term that is not possible with odesk, because they can block your a/c any time.

I will suggest any fresher to join with elance , because i feel they are better service provider and you can think for long term carrier

    • kreativemart

Well to be very hones, Elance is and will be the best ever freelancing platform. I joined them 5 years ago, I also joined oDesk. But the comfortlevel on Elance is much higher than oDesk. I never won a job on oDesk. On Elance I secured tons of jobs, and make a lot of money. Elance is the best marketing tool for Tech guys.

what happens if I own shares of oDesk? will this change the 409a valuation or FDSO?

Run them separately, freelancer combined several sites and the competition is just too much. Btw I think it’s too hard to find online work on all freelance sites nowadays.

    Congrats!

I hope this will help oDesk to improve their fixed-price projects. I am waiting for kind of escrow system to be implemented. Somehow I hesitate to work on this type of projects because there is no guarantee.

Right now I think hourly projects are the best choice in oDesk, since oDesk will hold contract with client when the payment method is not yet verified.

    • http://www.odesk.com Jenna Weiner

Thanks, C.P.! We expect you’ll see lots of great improvements on oDesk after the merger. Stay tuned!

I love to work in oDesk too, but company’s service is not going well.
oDesk suspended my account several months ago, while I had been working with several customers.
And never replied about my contact, and simply saying “Your account is under review. Please wait.”
I waited and waited to get my account reactivated, but not yet.

It is serious for my career.
I have worked hard and hard to land in odesk, and after getting 1st job, I have worked hard to deliver wonderful result to my clients.

Please let me know the reason, why you suspended.
And eagerly hope to reactivate my account!
    Thanks.

    Hi ,

I’m doing freelance work on oDesk for couple of years and have maintained good relationships with my clients(5 star rating). So I just want to know that the new site(MERGER) will create our profiles..?
Will there be a new profile for all ?
    or
You are trying to integrate our old profiles and ratings to the new profiles(in merger company) so that the efforts and hardwork we have done on oDesk in so many years be respected.

I am earning a good sum of MONEY via oDESk.
    Thanks to oDESK TEAM.

But , I’m affraid will this merger be impacting on my freelance career and …?
Will I have to look for a new job..?

    P.S.
    WORRIED :(

    Kind Regards,
    Manish Katoch

    • http://www.odesk.com Jenna Weiner

Hi Manish, don’t be worried! oDesk and Elance will continue to operate as separate platforms, so your profile, ratings and reputation will remain unchanged. The oDesk you know and love isn’t going anywhere — in fact, we expect that your oDesk experience will only improve, because we’ll have the combined resources and innovations that result from the merger. oDesk CEO Gary Swart recently addressed many of these concerns in his latest blog post here, take a look! https://www.odesk.com/blog/2013/12/hear-letter-freelancers-yesterdays-news/

  • http://gravatar.com/rarcntv rarcntv

ofcourse not. atleast 1 profile should be visible they are ready to show their achievement. So they will not private it may be few are. I don’t believe you earn that type of money. I check in lot of profile yes 100k $-300k earner available. There are some creative artist or group of team who work for 3d animation. their work capability like a hollywood film vfx etc. still I don’t see anyone who have earning more than $2000k. So definitely not and never suspend their account. I was wrong to forget another 0.

  • http://gravatar.com/serialentrep AAAJ

Yep Stupidity.. Elance is the same level as freelancer, hehe I seen on hackernews someone commented its like altavista buying google, lol exactly right.. elance and freelancer are full of scammers and even their management seems like scammers, they charge freelancers a membership fee lol, well good luck! I hire people on oDesk and it seems ok.. you can not beat the fundamentals of scammers you just need to cover your back but it seems like for some reason scammers gravitate to elance and freelancer.com, for some reason they love it! hehe. well oDesk is usable, I can post jobs and get my jobs done, its enough for me.. dont change

    • http://gravatar.com/rarcntv rarcntv

really? you may surprise if I like to show you something. may be going to crazy to earn money from elance. you kno why. some one earn more than 300k in elance? did you believe it? Lets show me one example user earn more than 200k $ in odesk. I check thousand of people profile don’t even seen like that one. So its its not quality they never earn like that.

      • Anthony Charles

I think I know why you can’t see the users earn more than 200k on odesk. many times, odesk support team suspends the users without any information to them. I’ve seen many freelancers who had been suspended without having any information and most of them are complaining about their suspension policy. I hired more than 10 developers – providing good quality works and having brilliant profile(worked more than 5k ~ 10k hours) and most of them are suspended this year. It makes many difficulties for freelances to work on odesk.

        • David B.

@rarcntv – some profiles are private – like mine for example. I don’t need someone looking at how much I earn, it’s not something I want to advertise. And this is mainly because If someone has seen that I earn a certain amount may think I am to expensive or to cheap.

        • http://gravatar.com/rarcntv rarcntv

I don’t see any one work with 5k -10k hourly rate. I believe you must be wrong. Even a hollywood artist never get that type of hour. definitely they are scam. thats why odesk suspend them. and if you hire them you may be you or don’t know exact hourly rate.

          • Anthony Charles

I hired the developers with $25~40 hourly rate. What I’m meaning is they are worked on odesk more than 5,000~10,000 hours.

        • Rock

Yes , you are right. I don’t know what happened with ODesk. One of my freelancer has 4.4 score, but his account was suspended. This doesn’t make sense to me. I think thats a really bad idea to merge elance with Odesk. Odesk will make things worst for Elance too.
I left the Odesk because of all this fuss, because once you feel comfortable working at ODesk then suddenly your account got suspended. Weird and disgusting.

          • David B.

Trust me , you don’t get suspended if you are innocent. The freelancer did something to get his account suspended. I have my account on oDesk since 2007 and started working on it on 2009 and until today I had no problems. But I respected the rules. So if you tell me out of thin air he/she got his/hers account suspended it sounds fishy to me.

          • http://twitter.com/briminam briminam

I could say the same thing a year ago, but then my account was suspended all of the sudden. I had a feedback 4.7 and never had a dispute with client, but they found I am providing “bad client satisfaction” without further explanation. If I did something wrong, for the life of me I wont know what that is. I felt terribly but it turned out to be a good thing. I started working on Elance and never looked back.

oDesk always had a problem with how they treat freelancers and prioritized clients, because they are the ones with credit card in hands. It seems oDesk is forgetting that without freelancers clients wouldn’t have what to do here.

Anyway, regarding this merge, I only hope oDesk will become more like Elance and not not the other way around.

          • kreativemart

Well, if you an account is suspended then there must be somethign wrong happend. May be a client of your freelancer wasnt happy with your go-to guy? I also got suspended once on Elance. I had been working on Elance for past 5+ years. I worked with them on the suspension and they understood my point of view and reinstated my account in couple days. If you know your case and yes, if you are innocent no force on Earth can cut you… You have every right to live your life legal way.

    • http://www.odesk.com Jenna Weiner

Hi AAAJ, thanks for your feedback. Rest assured that oDesk and Elance will remain as separate platforms, and the merger will only improve our ability to make oDesk a great experience!

  • Parthasarathy Ramanujam

I hope direct bank transfer feature of oDesk isn’t removed due to this merger. Elance withdrawals are pretty expensive. This feature of oDesk was one of the main reason that Freelancers chose oDesk over Elance!

    • http://www.odesk.com Jenna Weiner

Don’t worry, Parthasarathy — the direct bank transfer feature isn’t going anywhere!

  • http://gravatar.com/rarcntv rarcntv

Excellent idea. Because There are many people in Odesk cheat some good quality customer and in this case we loose quality customer. Where elance have quality market place and quality client who really understand those needs and their technology excellent advantages. So cheating people or spam freelancer going to vain. example offline billing. Odesk offline billing system not so good even confused client as well. But elance system very good even if you bill offline it will not get paid until their improvement and many more feature as well. After 3 years completely leave odesk. and Its really nice to hear you go with elance. Start career with elance exceptional position and quality work still continue. Odesk feedback system also bad for us. last year I was earning more than 30k from odesk. after 2 years they just going to crazy and give me bad feedback. But where elance have a system. they give us first good feedback. and later if I have any fight with them or miss understanding. I will not lose my career. so I have excellent experienced both freelancer sites. and its great I believe I can again start my career in odesk. Thanks for good decision. 85% cheater will lose their recent job as well. I am very happy about it.

    • http://www.odesk.com Jenna Weiner

Hi rarcntv, thanks for your thoughts. We think this merger will be a great thing for both the oDesk and Elance communities, allowing us to combine resources and innovations to make both platforms better!

      • http://gravatar.com/rarcntv rarcntv

hello Jenna. Thanks for great decision. and consider only feedback. because lot of fake and cheating or spam account can make money by odesk. I know there are many people even don’t know quality job but generate money by chating with client. I think odesk should take action for those account. Someone talk about good quality account but suspended because of spam activity. I believe if odesk constant monitoring it will be one of the great improvement for odesk. Thanks

  • http://shekharmahapatra.tk Shekhar

Got an early morning shock! heart break! with this news!

I have written back to Mr. Gary, as per email address provided, even before I have taken a glass of water, the reason is simple it will be disaster! but am also aware the deal is done. Although we all love Odesk now we need to search search for green pastures! Since merger elance philosophy will also be applied to Odesk that’s what I feel most of the freelancers will not like but will be appreciated by Contractor Agencies!

For me its good bye time ! We will miss ‘Odesk” the “good company”!

    • David B.

I feel the exact same thing. Unfortunately we can not do anything at this point. A merger means new business ideas ported from one platform to another. And in this case I tend to believe that Elance will be the one imposing his business idea on oDesk and this is just because Elance is focused on delivering low bids and high fees. This is simply a deduction theory, because it looks like any other merger in the world of business. When a merger happens jobs are lost, think of all the support team members from oDesk, some of them will be laid off. In a merger the main idea and goal is not how can we make life better for our employees, the main goal is “How can I make more money”. So anyone from oDesk could enlighten us how will this help us the provider “cogwheels” of oDesk? Soon after imposing their business model on oDesk they will drive the oDesk providers away with the Elance rules. All this will only help out the Elance provider pool, because they are used to Elance rules, and will get all the buyers from oDesk. And we the providers from oDesk will be left drying in the sun because it will be hard to adapt to the greedy business model of Elance.

      • http://www.odesk.com Jenna Weiner

Hi David, thank you for voicing your concerns. I would encourage you to read Gary’s latest blog post, which addresses many of the points you discuss: https://www.odesk.com/blog/2013/12/hear-letter-freelancers-yesterdays-news/ But I’d also like to reassure you that the most important goal of the merger was — and will always be — the happiness and success of our users, including our valued freelancers like yourself!

    • http://www.odesk.com Jenna Weiner

Hi Shekhar, thanks for your feedback. No need to be concerned — oDesk and Elance will continue to operate as separate platforms, but using the combined resources and innovations to make both better. We think your experience on oDesk is only going to improve! For more on this, please see Gary’s latest post (particularly #1): https://www.odesk.com/blog/2013/12/hear-letter-freelancers-yesterdays-news/

I think oDesk is better than Elance in so many ways because Elance has a membership fee while oDesk is free. Yes, 10% of the freelancers income goes to oDesk but it’s totally fine because oDesk has all the tools we need to organize our jobs like the time tracker and work diary.

    • http://www.odesk.com Jenna Weiner

Hi Rhoda, thanks for your feedback. Rest assured that there will be no changes to fees or membership structures as a result of the merger. In terms of the management tools, we expect those to get even better as a result of our combined resources and innovation!

  • http://malynsjournal@blogspot.com Malyn

I love oDesk far better from Elance. I just hope the merger won’t hurt us freelancers who were having a hard time landing on our first “virtual engagement” and that it will certainly bring better service for us and the clients as well.

    • http://www.odesk.com Jenna Weiner

Hi Malyn, thanks for weighing in. We believe strongly that the merger will bring better service and products for both freelancers and clients. And because the platforms are remaining separate, you don’t need to worry about landing another first project!

Less competition in the marketplace typically isn’t good, and ironically is what these companies were built upon. It sounds like a buyout to me.

  • Adam Ellis

So, how exactly is this a “merger” if the websites aren’t merging? It sounds like oDesk is simply under new ownership. Congrats to Gary Swart though! I’m sure he is making a nice profit from this sale.

    • http://www.odesk.com Jenna Weiner

Hi Adam, this merger is about combining resources and innovations to create two even better products and services. In Gary’s latest post (here: https://www.odesk.com/blog/2013/12/hear-letter-freelancers-yesterdays-news/) he notes that “just as Apple owns both iPhone and iMac, oDesk and Elance will remain separate platforms under a larger umbrella company.”

Just dont make us feel the hardships we’ve been through in the first time we landed on an online job. All im saying is that, we just hope our reputations and importance is the same as before.

    • http://www.odesk.com Jenna Weiner

Hi Joshy, thanks for your feedback. We very highly value the reputations and work histories our freelancers have earned on the site. Because odesk.com and elance.com will continue to operate as separate platforms, your profile should not be affected.

So there’s going to be a new company, Elance’s CEO will be the new CEO, and oDesk’s CEO will be “stepping aside” and “acting as a strategic advisor”. Despite all the positivity/hype oDesk is putting into this announcement, it sounds like Mr Swart got tired of this project, sold it, and is moving on to greener pastures / new projects.

It seriously feels like we’re being sold out. I guess time will tell.

    • http://www.odesk.com Jenna Weiner

Hi Andrew, thanks for weighing in. We are actually really excited about this merger, which will help both companies build even better platforms and services. You are certainly not being sold out — we expect that your oDesk experience will only get better as a result!

      • Naushad Ahamad

oDesk is much better than eLance, Working way of oDesk is much easier and efficient. I am not sure what will happen once both companies will merger but One thing i am sure that oDesk contractor going to face lots of problems.

I have lots of bad experience with eLance platform, I was working with eLance and work hard to get very good profile, have more than 10 regular clients but one day i got email from eLance that my account is suspended, due to eLance policy violation,

The main reason behind this for my account suspension was that in my day time i access my account from my office and later in night i access my account from home to work and updated client, due to this they suspended my account that I am using my account from different IP address,

If oDesk is also going to do the same thing after Merger with eLance, I am sure oDesk is getting to go down and down

        • http://www.odesk.com Jenna Weiner

Hi Naushad, thanks for sharing your thoughts. We take your concerns very seriously, which is why we will be keeping the two platforms separate. In fact, the combined resources and innovations resulting from the merger will enable us to provide an even better oDesk experience for you! oDesk CEO Gary Swart addressed some of these concerns in his latest blog post, which you can read here: https://www.odesk.com/blog/2013/12/hear-letter-freelancers-yesterdays-news/

Get Socked in early morning by hearing this news. Its really bad because It will reduce opportunities by 50%, The companies that’s are good performing on both platform oDesk + Elance will lost opportunity to get more Jobs and client.

Congrats and I hope everything goes well.

    • http://www.odesk.com Jenna Weiner

Thanks, Alex! We are excited and appreciate your kind words!

  • Ivan Nikolov

Only one word – Tragedy. Elance is a greedy platform, now they join with Odesk, so… same with happen with Odesk. It is becoming some kind of freelance monopoly. There will be two companies operating – Elance + Odesk and Freelacer (they sux totally!). This is a really bad news for every freelancer out there…

Hi Ivan, Thank you for sharing your reaction. However, we are committed to proving that the opposite will be true. We’ll keep the platforms separate so there will be no changes to fees or membership structures as a result of the merger. In fact, we are joining together to serve you and other customers better.

        How exactly?

      • https://www.facebook.com/jerome.p.acampado Jerome Acampado

If thats the case, whats the point of the merger? What kind of assurance can we get that the fee’s Elance asks from their user wont be applied to us Odeskers. I like odesk… NO I LOVE ODESK. it made it possible for me to work from home. but once we starts seeing elance fee’s being passed on to us I hope you wont take it against us if we “users” will find other means of working with our clients.

        • http://www.odesk.com Jenna Weiner

Hi Jerome, we’re so happy to hear that you have had a great experience on oDesk, and we fully expect that to continue. There are no plans to change oDesk’s fees or membership structure as a result of the merger, rest assured!

          • David B.

From what I have read it will be separate “For now”. But the CEO comes with ideas of how to make more money, the EC has only one vote in the board. The goal of the board? – Money
So please enlighten us how is Elance not going to impose the fees and membership structures on oDesk providers? It’s totally absurd, it’s contrary to anything that a merger is aiming for.

      • Ahmed

So you do accept that One is greedy and other is not … lolz

Hi , well I am a user since 2007 and to me this merger sounds like a bad thing. Elance has huge fees and a bad job application system. I guess this merger gives me and all the other freelancers the free hand to go with our clients elsewhere, since in the agreement was not specified that we will be sold out, this means Odesk breached the agreement and now the agreement is null. Dear freelance colleagues DO NOT forget that you agreed to something when you enrolled to Odesk and also Odesk agreed to provide you with this service and as a consequence they imposed some rules on you. But since any contract is voided by one of the parties not respecting the contract I wonder why would be staying in the joint Elance+Odesk thing. Plus Elance has this shitty system that asks you for an Invoice each week even though you did no f-ing thing for a client. I don’t get it, why is this news so wonderful for some? Please someone make me understand? The systems are so different that I can not see something useful coming out of this.

I understand most people were tracking both places, so expecting this move to bring some use to everyone for real. Looking forward to see how integration works out. Good luck!

Thank you! We think you will be really happy with how the merger works out; we are looking forward to it!

Seems like both Odesk and Elance have realized that they both can help each other. Coworking is a good move unless it becomes a monopoly. Good luck :)

Thank you Fahad! I think you’ll be pleased with how things unfold. :)

not sure what will be the account that we work both odesk and elance. i am working on high profile and a long time so there is a good feedback and work history on odesk. let see how coming…

        • Kevin Spence

It seems great, but I’m not sure it is better to oDesk.
And I as well as almost people think that oDesk platform is more useful than Elance as clear and simple constructure.
Also some people have thought that oDesk will go ahead of Elance in close future.

          Best Luck.

          • http://jayabhat.a@gmail.com Jaya

Not sure from business prospective but oDesk was/is far better than Elance and in near future you would have been at the top of the chart. When there was a chance to overtake them, why shake hands? Hope we users are not affected by this in anyway.
oDesk gave me a new work life and I would not want to lose it.

            Anyways, all the best!

What about freelancers having profiles in both elance and odesk as most do .I personally feel elance is a better platform on fixed priced tasks and it has min rates and bids where odesk has no min rates and bids (it has but for statements only ) elance never accept payoneer payout debit cards and odesk does ,,what will happen on this .This merging will helps clients ,elance and odesk ,but not for the freelancers who got great profiles on both sites spending very hard last few years. Average job gettable rate will decreased here ,,seems trouble for freelancers ..

          • http://www.odesk.com Jenna Weiner

Hi nsubashd, Jaya, Kevin and Matthew, thanks for weighing in. I would encourage you to read Gary’s latest blog post here https://www.odesk.com/blog/2013/12/hear-letter-freelancers-yesterdays-news/ which addresses those very concerns!

@fahaduddin this is monopoly buddy .. what else you need to believe it …. ?

      • http://jivebay.com/ jive

They are only staying seperate in the short term, don’t be fooled, the 2 will end up becoming one site. Hopefully oDesk’s way of doing things will win, because elance sux.
