yes, there are a lot cheap jobs posted out there. instead of just feeling angry at the cheapskate buyers and the providers willing to be used, and getting frustrated at oDesk for various reasons, why don't you post here any jobs that you think qualifies in the category of "cheap"? we can't do anything about their rates, but at least we have control over our reaction to them. lighten up!

To rewrite a 35-page document takes how many hours? 8? 10? I can imagine the level of "excellent" English the buyer will get for this budget.

It works both ways

It definitely works both ways. There is a job out there at the moment asking for article writers, the buyer has given a budget of 10k. Clearly, he has put down any number to see what bids come in and he has specifically asked for a bid per article.

The average bid price: 3.6k. There is no way that the vast majority of bidders have even read the posting because surely nobody can expect anything like that kind of money.

i was just at PeoplePerHour and i saw that they have this feature in the job posts where contractors can ask questions about the job. there are some cheap buyers there, and a lot of contractors say something to the effect:

scamming buyers are also known because of their Clarification Board feature. one buyer posted a job post and he seemingly asked some to submit a sample article written on spec. here are the comments he got on his job post:

We had a similar feature like

We had a similar feature like that a few years back to communicate with questions regarding the project before bidding. You know what happened? Spammers started posting things like... "I can do this... please hire me", "I can start right away...", "I can do this, please contact me at myname@mymail.com", "my company haz lotz of xperience, plz vizit www.zyxcompany.com...", "letz get started, contact me at ... to work outside odesk" etc. I may be bit exaggerating, but instead of using that feature in a proactive way, the providers started abusing it.

I've been following PPH too. I'm glad to see there is no spammer on the provider side, at least for now. Wink

Really? Most trained transcribers won't even consider anything less than $45 per audio hour (which can take 4-8 hours of work depending on the audio) and you want to pay $1.00 per a/h? And just to sweeten the post, offer another 63 videos as an inducement?? I'm supposed to be tempted by the thought of another 126 work hours for which I'll be paid $31.50? That's not a job offer, that's attempted robbery, pure and simple.

I enjoy bidding on these types of jobs at my normal hourly rate x estimated hours. Recently bid on a job with a budget of $XX.00; my bid was $X,XXX.00. It also triggered several messages from him as well....LOL. Sure his average is wacky now, but my bid was in the range of what the work product should cost.

i would suggest flagging it, but as jacqui has said, they can't do anything about it if the contractor agrees.

here's my thought though: i think the $.01 is nominal only, just something to keep track of the hours worked. i think the contractor is being paid outside oDesk. there was a thread once when somebody here saw a profile of a woman charging only $.01, and someone from oDesk said there was a prior arrangement about it. after all, i can't really believe someone would go that low! can you?

Just put it up for interest's sake. Funny thing is the original budget was ridiculously low for the work involved. I had a quick look at the contractor's profile and the maximum he/she has earned from similar contracts is $6.

Ah well - it is THEIR choice - not actually worth flagging - but it does give a whole new meaning to "consenting adults" Smile

99% off Cheap Consulting?

There is an employer who is large enough to be running 82 databases across 5 installations of MS SQL Server who is looking for some advance consulting for a relatively large migration project. The scope for this part sounds like about 1 day of work for a senior database architect to do a good job of analysis, research and documentation.

Real-world rates? Say $1000 for the day. Employers budget? Well, a whopping $10. Must be a mistake, right? No ... employer has a bottom-feeder history. Never paid more than $3.33 an hour.

PPH is hard to break into because many employers restrict bidding on many jobs to UK residents, but the rates typically are really good and are closer to market rates. Many jobs in UK are contract based anyway. Also many of the jobs are posted by real companies as well.
