I've seen that one

Apparently doesn't find anybody, jokers or otherwise, because s/he has posted that joke post every single day for the last couple of months. Think he tried it on Elance as well but was deleted for being silly.

Those clients think that cost

Those clients think that cost of living is low in Asian countries but they just miss the point that it's not as low as $6 a day. They have just calculated it wrong from whatever god knows sources.

The sad thing,,,

The sad thing is that if you look at this clients jobs history, a lot of people are working for these rates.

If people are willing to do it, people will continue to ask for it.

Watch and weep.

I know this thread has been dead for ~3 weeks, but I just *had* to post this.

150 000 words in two days? Even just the typing alone, without thinking or any of the other magic that fruitcake demands, would take an expert typist with a typing speed of 90 words per minute 28 hours....

its a farmed job...

Some idiot got behind on a deadline and now needs somebody to play catch-up for them.

That's about 375 pages of copy, all for the top dollar price of $336. Less than $1 a page, or around $0.002 cents a word.

I think I'll hop right on that....yea, buddy. Tongue

Not to mention

Not to mention the "must design cover" part. So not only would the contractor have to produce a 150k-word novel in 2 days, he/she must produce a book cover as well! Brilliant!

And writers seem to make such

And writers seem to make such sterling cover designers--just look at all those self published gems out there.

No, i am not.

There was the joker who wanted:

A top notch Sales and Customer Service Rep who could also do translations, was fluent in 3 languages to business level, and lived in PARIS (one of the most expensive cities to live in in Europe.)

You were told NOT to apply if you intended to charge more than $ 2.00 an hour.

Yes. OF COURSE. There will be plenty of people who live in Paris, have all the qualities asked for, speak fluent English, French and Italian, and would just ADORE to work for $ 2.00 an hour..... Laughing out loud

Even if that person worked 60 hours every week they'd not even be able to rent a room there....

$2-3 per 1,000 words

____Pay____

• Current rate range $2-$3 per 1000 words and is exclusive of any financial or service charges. No Upfront payment before you start anything.
• $2 per 1000 words is for checking content to a level that a high school student will not find any fault with, ensuring that it conforms to the requirements set for it and is free of typo and grammatical error. This is the starting level for content produced.
• $3 per 1000 words are for more professional editing and proofing, requiring more knowledge of the reading audience and purpose of the content, or helping feedback minor language issues with some writers.

Angry

These folks are IDIOTS.

Course I'm the one sitting here at 1am right so guess that doesn't make me too bright either Wink

Yep

The job description was actually 5x that size with MANY qualifications and skills required, it was just far too long to post. I figured I'd just get to the good stuff. I applied to the job for $2000 and 100% upfront payment lol. I explained that those rates were not even remotely reasonable and they needed to pay more for a professional. There were only two applicants, so now their average rate is jacked up. Wink

Hopefully they'll get the picture, but I doubt it.

Whilst I totally understand the temptation to do what you did, (I have wanted to do the same many times) it may well get the application reported as "spam" and if that happens too often you could be in trouble...

Quote:

Yes. And all they have to do is reject it and down it goes again.

I don't do it often

I see many low jobs I don't bother with, but on the really low ones like this, I will apply with a high rate and 100% upfront payment – at the same time, I explain why and do not phrase things in a way that is berating. I have never been given a warning or anything of that nature, but if I do receive one, I wouldn't bother continuing with it. It's just something fun to do once in a while and makes you feel better.

Quote:
Yes. And all they have to do is reject it and down it goes again.

The application is usually declined, yes, but sometimes it is not. On the occasions that it is, I at least made it go up for an hour or two and encouraged other people to bid higher. 90% of the time the client responds first and tries to justify their rates.

This is the first time I have bid a very high amount, because I did not want to be accepted for this job. I haven't seen a rate that ridiculous in months.

On all other occasions, I will bid with what I'd normally charge for the work load and explain that the type of work is worth more than the client is asking, so those applications do not look "spammy."

“You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.” - Inigo Montoya

I do the same thing... But I

I do the same thing... But I interpret the 'Est. Budget' as 'Estimated Budget'.
Which in my thinking leaves it wide open for me to bid 5,000 when the 'Est.Budget'
is only 300.00.

I do quantify that amount with what is required for the job.

Don't see how it can be called spam then.

I thought...

I thought it could only be labelled spam if you had no intention of taking to job.

People can't really argue if you place a bid above their budget if you are willing to take the job although at a much higher rate than posted.

Well...

David Gregory wrote:

Well...

Jennifer C. wrote:

I also think there are many definitions of what constitutes a "Spam Application" and I'm not sure I have seen the one you mention.

It's happened to me when I entered a realistic (but MUCH higher than the client's budget) bid once. I was told it had been reported as Spam - not that I heard anything more from anyone, mind you, so either it wasn't reported or not seen to have been a problem if it actually was.

Not spam

Petra R. wrote:

You are not supposed to bid if you are not qualified and willing to do the work. So, technically, yes, if there is no intention of considering the contract, it can be labeled as spam.

However, that is different than the case of bidding a reasonable rate that just happens to be extremely high compared to the client's estimated budget. In the case you mention, Petra, I think the client can report it as spam all he wants, but if the bid reflects something comparable to what the contractor regularly earns, I can't see oDesk viewing it as such. Let's face it, for many of these jobs, a decent contractor can bid in excess of 1000 times the client's estimated budget and still be well under the usual pay rate earned by the contractor.

Just unlucky

Perhaps you were unlucky then, I have done this since I joined the site and have never been flagged for spamming.

I think I've got this one beat

I think I've found one that's even cheaper. They're looking for a proofreader.

Payment 25$ for 50 articles each can be 500 to 1000 words

Bid only if you are an expert as last time we posted a job for the same task and interviewed 100's to get 10 good clients

Our expectations are high so please bid only if you are an Expert

So basically, they want an expert editor who is willing to work for 50 cents an article. I probably wouldn't have mentioned this except for the "our expectations are high so please bid only if you are an Expert" part.

Sometimes, I'm amazed at the jobs that get posted here.

A lot of people

A lot of people think proofreading is easy. After all, it's "just" looking at text and finding mistakes? Yeah, right.

That must be a typo surely. $1 for 500 articles? That's too ridiculous even for oDesk

Yeah

I suspect you're right Aleah. Although even those vastly improved terms would still be laughable.

I recently

I recently applied to a job for a research project (not an academic one) requiring manual thematic data analysis. The client told me he liked my qualifications, and if I could bring down my rate to $6/hr, he would hire me.

Seriously? $6/hr for a complex task that requires higher education and experience? I wanted to tell him where he can stuff his project, but I contented myself by saying thanks but no thanks.

Sometimes, you need to tell them to stuff it...politely Smile

Best part is one of the feedbacks they left for a $0.06/hr contractor. "We ended her contract cause we have agreed to assigned her to higher position." The lucky, promoted contractor now makes $0.10/hr which is 5x more than what the previous contractor made, $0.02/hr. Why is this allowed? What is 10% of 2 cents?

I've noticed

I've noticed that a lot of bottom-feeding clients also give out a lot of really low feedback, like 1 to 3 stars. I mean, they already give such low rates, why not make up for it by giving the contractor high ratings? Unbelievable.

I noticed that, too!!

I noticed that too. The cheaper they are the more demanding they seem to be. It's also those extra entitled "I AM AN EMPLOYER!!" types who are hell to work with because of their attitudes.....

Because they deserve it for

Because they deserve it for even applying to those shi*ty jobs. No self respect no good feedback. Simple as that.

It goes hand in hand with the

It goes hand in hand with the overentitled mentality. I've seen the low rate, low feedback clients too and to be fair, this $0.02/hr client does leave excellent feedback - but what's that feedback gonna be worth? It pains me to see that someone worked 50 hrs to make ONE dollar - but that's their choice, I get it. But how does oDesk break even on contracts like that? They use the infrastructure, they have access to support, while generating nothing.
