When Odesk Closes A Contract Automatically

Just wondering, how does odesk decide when it is going to do this?

Even if a contract has been inactive for some time, doesn't mean the client won't contact you down the road. I've been contacted by clients after several months of not hearing from them.

I've had one this morning...

If there has been no activity for 90 days then oDesk closes the contract. Years ago oDesk sent reminders, I think, after 30 and 60 days but that seems to have gone by the board now. I also had a contract closed on Monday and not more than five hours later the client sent me some more work so she just re-hired me.

Unfortunately when this happens clients never seem to leave a feedback. I don't know whether they can't be bothered or whether they think I've closed the contract but I always leave a feedback saying that oDesk and not me has closed the contract. I had worked for 49 hours on the contract that was cancelled this morning and although I very rarely apply for jobs here, it doesn't look great having a blank client feedback on the top of my profile and raises questions as to why it was closed after such a long time.

I believe that if a client

I believe that if a client doesn't show any activity on an open contract for months, it's bad for the contractor because while reviewing your job application, a new client might see that you have 7 or 8 jobs in progress so he might think that you're kind of busy and he will not give you the job while in fact you're working for only two or three active clients. Even I'm currently working for only three active clients while I have 7 jobs in progress and I'm thinking to end some contracts soon.

They can contact you

A client can always contact a person he has previously hired, even after the contract is closed. You are still in the closed contracts folder for future contact.

That's some good info

That's some good info Margaret but I have noticed that some of my clients are completely novice who are still learning their way around ODesk and I almost needed to guide a client on how to start a contract on ODesk, so that I can start working for him. They are genuine but they have a hard time working with new age stuff like ODesk. If I end the contract for these type of clients, they are going to have a hard time finding me in the closed contract folder because they would never think that such a folder really exists on ODesk.

Really??

They are hiring someone to work on-line, remotely , via the internet and they have trouble with "new age stuff like oDesk?'
Really?? Come on....they found oDesk didn't they? They managed to put in their payment method and hire you, so apparently they have not been living under a rock for the past 20 years.
