oDesk does not protect the contractor

I just had what was possibly the worst experience at oDesk.
A group of unscrupulous developers called *removed by admin* worked on my project, billed me 3 times the original quote.
The work was unfinished, 3 weeks late. I had to hire a whole new team who accomplished the work in less time and reported that all the work done by the *removed by admin* team was broken and substandard.
I provided extensive evidence from Skype and email conversations committing to missed deadlines, the team extorting more money from me and how poor the workmanship/ delivery was.
When I raised disputes, oDesk did not support me in trying to recover the funds or ban the contracted team.
Today I tried to close my account - and oDesk's system wouldn't allow that as well.
I am totally shocked. Not only have they allowed these people to prey upon a startup, they don't back their clients interms of delivery or quality.
At least platforms like 99designs or designcrowd give some sort of money-back guarantee.
Disgusted and disgruntled.
