Was This Client Unethical?

I am new to odesk and just had an experience that sucks. I applied for a job as a writer, the person I contacted was apparently some sort of headhunter, because next thing I know this client has me signing up with W9's etc. to write for them on an ongoing basis.
I wondered about where odesk fit into the picture, as this client effectively removed the hiring discussion away from odesk and hired me without anymore interaction with odesk.
They were paying 1 dollar for every 100 words, and since I was new to writing for others I thought I would try it. I am a research writer and every thing I write is well researched and thought out. After writing 3 articles for these people, I realized that they are turning around and charging their clients much more for these articles. I will never write for anyone at such low rates again - I may be new to odesk but am not an inexperienced writer.
I walked away after writing 3 articles, for which they will not pay me. Their rule is you don't get paid until you complete 10 articles. I walked after 3 articles had been submitted to them and their client.
I am thinking this was a bad gig to have gotten into. I am new here at odesk so am wondering if this is a common occurrence here?
I did tell them I would not allow them to use the 3 articles that I had already submitted to them, which I know their client had seen and approved of. I know that I own the articles until I am paid for them. Is there any way other than monitoring the internet for plagiarism or something like that to make sure they don't use my work?
I guess I really goofed this one up. I am hoping that since they did not hire me with odesk in the picture that they cannot hurt me with a bad rating - is this true?
I realized after I was hired that they had effectively gone around odesk - I did not realize they were doing that as I was totally green and did not know what the hiring process should be like here. I have learned a hard lesson with this experience.
Thank you in advance for any insights on this experience you may give me.
