Other contractors showing on my profile

I may not bring into oDesk much money, but if other contractors' profile links start showing up on my profile I will be gone as soon as the two jobs I have are
completed.

Holy Sh*t

When did that start? I just looked at your profile an saw "Similar Contractors" listed there. Give me a break. what the heck is this?
I must heartily complain.

last night

This was a change after the Weekly Maintenance last night. BAD

If i goto view as others see

If i goto view as others see it, it does not show up.

can someone post a link to it like they did for Petra, please.

I still can't see them, but I would like an oDesk response ASAP!

Joseph, I'm now on the laptop and I still can not see them, not on your profile, not on mine, not on the few random profiles I clicked on. I tried from my contractor account and my client account.

That's extremely weird.

Are they maybe rolling it out to a selected proportion of users only?

oDesk? Anyone care to comment and tell us what on earth you're playing at? If you (oDesk) start using my profile to advertise the services of my competitors I'll not just be unhappy, I'll be absolutely livid!

yes!

Hi Dini J.,

This is Jenna from the oDesk marketing team. Apologies for the delay in my response; we have taken your concern extremely seriously and were taking the time to put together an appropriate solution. The product team has revised the program so that contractors can opt out -- you can see the full details of the changes here: https://www.odesk.com/community/node/29217.

Please let me know if you have any questions or further concerns.

Thanks!

Hi Jenna,I have some

Hi Jenna,

I have some questions about "similar contractors".

What do you believe - is it good or bad for my freelance business to show my competitors on my profile? (And I am asking you as an oDesk representative.)

If oDesk believe that it is good, can you explain why it is good for my freelance business?

If oDesk believe that showing my competitors on my profile is good for my business, will you apply the same principle to oDesk? Will you show your competitors on site? For example is it OK if I post links to other freelance sites on my oDesk profile?

If oDesk believe that this is bad for contractors, why you did it?

If you are not sure is it good or bad for contractors, will you remove "similar contractors" and start a survey with voting (publicly visible) for this new "feature"?

Will you make "similar contractors" opt-in instead of opt-out? If no, why?

Regards,

Valentin Novakov

I am absolutely livid

When I go t see my profile as other do .
Yes, there is three other contractors listed under the title of similar contractors.
On my profile.
This is what I'd like to see happen. First, it stopped immediately.
I think every single contractor on oDesk should put in a ticket today to have this stopped.

Thanks Natasha, Went to two

Thanks Natasha,

Went to two of the ones with public profiles.

Nothing to worry about from those two.

I am sure tho that eventually there will be some shown
with rates cheaper than me that could give me a run
for my money.

I am not worried at all

To me it's not about this, it's about not wanting other people on MY profile. I do not want oDesk to use MY profile to advertise other contractors. I hate to look at my profile and see I have company...grrr..

Hard for me to get jealous

I understand everyone's concerns and I understand how it might be frustrating to feel you are competing on price alone, but I find it very difficult to get upset by the fact that someone else's services are being advertised for $2/hour alongside my profile. To some of you, these may be "bottom feeders" but I live in a country (Egypt) where the vast majority of people are earning less than that. I have friends who are mid-career professionals earning a lot less than that and they get jealous if they hear someone in the same government ministry they work for is earning that much and assume they must be corrupt to earn that much! I know if they knew how much I earn here they would be in absolute awe. $2/hour is more than a starting salary for a computer programmer who has graduated with a BS here, and that is if he can find a job; unemployment among college graduates is super high. Earning $2/hour puts someone in the top 20% of earners worldwide. That may be stiff competition for you to deal with, but almost everyone on oDesk is earning well over the average even if it seems like a pittance to you. Most everyone here is among the elites because they can compete at a global level and earn a relatively high income doing so, even if they are earning less than you. If you can get a two-figure sum per hour then you are doing amazingly well at a global level. If that isn't good enough for you, then look for work closer to home.

They are not all $2 profiles

There is almost always one who is the same or close price, so no, they are not all $2 profiles. On mine there is a $40/hr person and on others I have seem contractors who are the same price as they are charging. On your profile there is a $12.22/hr person from the US with 5 stars. Why would I hire you after I see this person? I would give her a look see.
If someone chooses them over my by clicking on them in my profile am I getting a cut of their income? I doubt it. If not then why am I advertising them?

my profile represents and advertises for the hard work I've done this is not about the dollar amount. This is about making yourself shine to find work. I have been with oDesk now for three years. I started at the bottom on my own merit. Why do I need to advertise for somebody else they need to be on their own merit.

for me this isn't about

for me this isn't about "competing on price" or "jealousy" at all. far from it. i just don't like the feeling of "unwanted guests" in my profile. it's like i live in my house but then the government says anybody can stay in it with me and there's nothing i can do about it. i keep the place spick and span but then 3 people come along and messes things up, just because the government says they can. now that would really p*** me off.

and i'd want to stay in other people's houses only if i get to choose where to go, and not because the government feels like throwing me in with just anybody. so no, i wouldn't want *my* profile to be another "similar contractor" in somebody else's profile either. Puzzled

What happens when a buyer searches?

They may see you on a page with ten other contractors in the results. You are never going to be the only thing they see.

Point missed....

Nicole H. wrote:

Obviously.

If I, however, apply for a contract and my application is such that the client visits MY profile based on MY cover letter then I would like that client to see what they have specifically come to see, which is MY profile.

I object to oDesk declaring, as fact, to the client whom *I* have dragged, kicking and screaming, to MY profile, that the Randoms are in any way, shape,or form, "similar."

I am not frightened of the competition, I just don't want them on my profile, and I don't want to be on theirs.

I would also be ever so grateful if you could resist that seemingly overwhelming urge to give a lecture on what a fantastic rate $ 2.00 an hour is in X Y Z country at every opportunity you get. It is not relevant to this thread. Thanks a lot!

Are you the monitor of this forum?

You seem to think you have the right to tell others what they can talk about. I never said $2/hour is a great salary, just that it is above the median at a global level. I'm not suggesting anyone should feel forced to lower their rates but making derogatory remarks about people in this wage category such as calling them "bottom feeders" isn't very nice either.

I've been away from oDesk for a few years and when coming back decided to get a feel for how things were going here since I had been gone by checking out the forums. I've always worked in international environments with teams from many countries who were tolerant and accepting of people who were different from them. I'm sorry to say that, at least those who tend to dominate these forums these days, seem to a great extent to express subtle prejudice against others who aren't like them or are completely forthright with their prejudices.

I am sure this is not reflective of the oDesk community as a whole, but the forums certainly are not an environment that will attract the type of contractors and more importantly to us, clients who are seeking to work in a tolerant, accepting international environment.

Very well said!

This is the kind of spirit I want to see in oDesk and it makes me feel calm and secure to work here.

yes, as Petra said, point

yes, as Petra said, point missed. making a search is different from visiting one contractor's profile. anyway, i don't want to keep repeating myself: it's my profile, i decide what i do with it. that's all i'm saying.

I do not like this and I did put a complaint into oDesk to technical support.
I suggest that everyone does the same. I suggest we flood oDesk with this complaint.
I agree with Junelle A. this is my profile. This is my spot in the world to shine.
To prove myself. If somebody wants to hire somebody else go to their profile or check out as many as you'd like. But give me my one spot in the world to shine.

One issue, One Comment

Nicole H. wrote:

To start, you need to contact customer support to change your profile from "United States" to Egypt as you have clearly stated that is where you live.

The main point people are taking issue with is not the rate, but the fact that any other contractor is being advertised in their profile.

advertising other contractors on my profile

Margaret P. wrote:

I must heartily complain.

I contacted oDesk and put in a complaint about having my profile advertise new or other contractors. I have worked now for oDesk for three years. This is my page/my profile to advertise me. This was implemented the end of March 2013.
I hope every single person on oDesk complains about this. We should be able to have our own individual profile to advertise and promote ourselves.

Please remove this feature! This is crazy :(

We should NOT be forced to display other contractors on OUR profile. When inviting contractor clients already get a pop up window suggesting 3 similar contractors, now also on contractors profiles?? Why?? I was told the contractors on my profile will no longer show after 48 hours because I withdrew my application, but this means I can no longer apply to jobs, well at least not if I want to continue to be the only one on my profile. What happens if I get invited? Will this also mean 3 contractors on my profile?

I am really upset with this Sad

Natasha, I STILL can not see "them"

When I look at your profile it displays as normal. No Randoms on there, at all! I am now on the laptop. I have tried three different browsers. I tried the laptop and the iPad. I looked from my contractor account and my client account.

I
CAN
NOT
SEE
THEM

same here

cant see them, too. weird!

Oh joy... I can see my Randoms now...

Petra R. wrote:

Well, I can now. My day started so well...

Urgh.....

I can see mine now as well.

I can see mine as well so it looks like instead of getting rid of them, oDesk is actually expanding the program.

Nice to know that we're being listened too. From the responses that I read from the programming person who is responsible for this, it seems like oDesk has no plans for getting rid of it.

To all

To Joseph, Margaret and Katrina: I've looked at your profiles and can't see anything.

To Petra and Natasha: I can only see 'similar contractors' if I click on oTranslators and five contractors pop up (the same five on both profiles) followed at the bottom by 'See all 699 contractors'.

Me: can't see anything on my profile.

So I don't know what the heck is going on!

ETA: I'd be grateful if someone would have a look at my profile - thanks.

To me your profile looks clear of Randoms, Jean

I don't see any Randoms on your profile, Jean, but I don't see them anyway, it seems. Neither do you by the looks of it.

It must be something they are displaying or not displaying selectively.

I hope someone from oDesk will come and tell us about this newest development.

I am NOT happy about it. Not happy at all!

I don't plaster my profile with adverts for Elance and Guru. So I'd be eternally grateful if oDesk didn't plaster my profile with adverts for the people I am competing for contracts with.

OK, so I don't actually compete because I rarely ever apply for anything, but I *STILL* do not want the Randoms on my profile.

Thanks for looking

I agree with everything you said. I wonder how long we have to wait before oDesk comes back to us.

I don't apply for jobs anymore either, just do invitation only, but yes I don't want anything on my profile that has nothing to do with me and certainly not my competitors.

Junelle, thanks for looking too

Maybe Petra and I are the only ones that can't see it. I've tried three different browsers and they're all the same. Don't know any other way of looking at my profile other than "see your profile as others do" - I'll keep checking in case it changes.

So this means even if I don't apply I will still get random contractors on my profile grrrr. The only reason I withdrew my application was because I thought that by withdrawing I would get rid of the contractors from profile.

you said it.

Natasha R. wrote:

yep. i haven't been applying to jobs either, but it's there anyway. and like in Petra's case, it doesn't matter if you're in a group or not, the "similar contractors" will not go away.

Can you please give me more information about this new feature. Are you sure they will gone after 48 hours? Will new contractors show on my profile? How can I avoid this? Will it help if I don't apply to jobs?

Dear Natasha,

I am now escalating this ticket to our Engineering department for review. I will respond to you should we need additional information or as soon as a resolution is in place. I will keep you updated, and I greatly appreciate your patience while your request is being processed.

Please let me know if I can be of additional assistance in the meantime. I will be happy to help. Thank you.

Natasha, what gave you the idea that it had anything to do with applications? Just trying to understand the thought process.

I am actually irritated as hell about this - and possibly even MORE so because it's happening behind my back and my profile is plastered with other contractors and I can't even **S*E*E** the Randoms.

I object to Randoms littering my profile. *Especially* Randoms who appear to have "borrowed" my title or accidentally had the same idea...

Yesterday after applying to a job I noticed the 3 contractors on my profile, I assumed it was a new feature and that by withdrawing they would be gone, I then submitted a ticket and the support person said it would take up to 48 hours, but now she has escalated my ticket. After reading Jean's comments I see this is worse than what I thought.

Right next to one of YOUR wonderful feedback comments

similar contractor

48 hours until WHAT though?

Natasha R. wrote:

I have a horrible feeling that the support person may have meant that it will take up to 48 hours to get a response, rather than 48 hours to remove the Randoms. I am not sure it can be just switched on and off like that....

oDesk probably thinks we'll be overjoyed and grateful, because *WE* get to feature on other people's pages as well.

The rub is: I don't WANT clients to think that the Randoms, whether I am on their profile or they are on mine are "contractors like me" - just cheaper.

I have worked my socks off for my history and my feedback. The Randoms are *NOT* like me. They may be great and wonderful and they may even be "better" than me.

But I am *ME* and how DARE anyone suggest that Randoms are "other contractors like this one"

Can you tell I'm upset about this?

Why no response from oDesk?

Right!!!!

This is clearly a new implementation that has upset a lot of people. oDesk, can you please explain your reasoning behind this?

Support person

Petra R. wrote:

I told the support person:
I withdrew my application so the contractors should no longer show on my profile.
Answer:Please always allow 24-48 hours for an update

I then updated my ticket asking:

Answer:

Me: Thank you so much for escalating this ticket. I really want to know what I can do to avoid this or if I will be FORCED to advertise other contractors on MY profile. I do not advertise Elance or any other site on my oDesk profile so why on earth is oDesk doing this to us contractors Sad

I will share the new answer, wonder how long this will take..

Because it is the weekend in California

And the execs who make the key decisions about stuff like this probably work in an office from 9-5.

Maybe they are testing the feature

Maybe the reason they said it would be gone in 48 hours is because they are testing it in a limited rollout to gauge reaction? Just a thought.

Maybe it's a glitch
