Updates to the skills taxonomy

In an effort to further streamline the skill bubbles and make them more meaningful for contractors and clients alike, we are updating the skills taxonomy.

The terms used to describe skills and jobs help connect clients and contractors and hence need to be clear and precise. We will be removing duplicate entries and updating others to make them clearer and more useful.

What you can do to improve your profile:

  • - Starting today, contractors will see a message on their profiles if any of their listed skills need to be updated. If you see a message, please follow the link to make any necessary changes.
  • - If no changes are made, in a month, we will begin migrating users to the new taxonomy.

Thank you for all your feedback so far on the Green Skills bubbles. We’re working to update the specific skills and tests that you reported are not working quite right and corrections should be in place soon!

Happy working!

UPDATE AS OF MAY 18th (UTC):

Thank you for all your feedback. We apologize for the issues some users experienced with the new skills taxonomy. While we always strive to release new features only when they've been fully tested and are ready for use, because of the complexity of adding, deleting, and changing thousands of skills, we did encounter a few problems. We’ve quickly fixed these issues. Please see the thread below for replies to specific questions.

We encourage you to review and update your skills, as they are a key factor in clients finding you. And, as always, please let us know if you have additional feedback to share!

Happy working,

Awesome. Ditching Windows 7

Awesome. Ditching Windows 7 but leaving XP intact. Now all we need is Windows 95 test or maybe Win 3.11 Smile

We've corrected this error

We've corrected this error and apologize for the inconvenience. windows-7-administration is now a skill in our database.

Please Explain

Please Explain, I did not undertaker this 100%

you will see a yellow message

if this apply to you , you will see a yellow message over your dashboard, all you have to do is click it, it will take you to your profile list of skills, those who have to be replaced will have a link below to them saying "replace this skill", click it and type it again, it will show you different skills, just choose the one more related to the one that was there. in case it doesnt say "replace! just take the test that will be indicated there.

What the ?????

So you'll "retire" my skills which are genuine, and with the appropriate tests having been taken, but don't "count" because you have so far failed to link the relevant tests to the appropriate skills and vice versa???????

There isn't even a real explanaton as to why stuff gets retired.

Yes. Another bright move. NOT!

Why don't you SORT things first, and THEN start messing with people's profiles? Would that not be a much better idea?

Why oh why does oDesk put half baked, half sorted, half developed and half working measures into place? How about getting it RIGHT **FIRST** ?

Please Explain

Hi,

I wish to know the reason behind this move. There were no duplicate entries on any of the profile.

And also, I would like to know if more than one agency contractor are not expected to have same skills?

Thanks,

Abhishek

Hi Abhishek, thanks for the

Hi Abhishek, thanks for the message. Our intent was not to remove duplicate entries on your profile, but to remove duplicate entries from our skills database. If a skill have been identified as being retired, then there should be an equivalent skill in the database that you can use in its place. Let me know if you see a skill missing that you want to be there. My email is samirlakhani at odesk.com.

Agency contractors should each have their own profile and can certainly have the same skills.

+1 one with this, and here is why.
You are forcing me for doing a Web Graphic Design test when I am an Graphic Designer for print material? And if I don't do the test you will remove my Graphic Design Skill? How is that please, they are 2 different principles?
This is just not right!

Goce, we have fixed this.

Goce, we have fixed this. Graphic-design has been added back to the list. We apologize for the error.

Why Oh Why Indeed!

The same reason there are never-ending, useless, confusing, and unnecessary changes to Facebook on a frequent but irregular basis, all unannounced.

I will give oDesk credit for warning us, though. Smile At least this way, we have a chance to give feedback. BTW, FWIW, I HATE FB!!!

Thanks for the thoughts Hal.

Thanks for the thoughts Hal. I think we've fixed the issues. Let us know if we haven't.

BTW, I love Facebook - it keeps me in touch with my friends and family and is completely free - what else could you ask for Smile

Petra, thanks for the

Petra, thanks for the feedback, and I apologize for the issues that were introduced with this change. We strive to release features that are free of issues, and we came up short in this case. We have taken steps to ensure this type of issue does not occur again in the future.

I believe that all the issues have been corrected and that any skills that are being retired will have replacements in our refreshed skills list.

The value in making this change is significant because it will help eliminate redundancies and more specifically describe the type of work that is done on oDesk.

Adobe Premiere

Removal of skills

Why would you "retire" Adobe Premiere as a skill??? I'm a motion graphics artist and video editor, and the vast majority of my clients (and those in the industry) use one of three or four platorms -- they are FINAL CUT, ADOBE PREMIERE, AVID, and SONY VEGAS.

I don't understand the logic or reasoning behind retiring one of my primary skills. I read the post above, and I don't understand how removing a software application will help streamline anything for the client or the service provider.

Please reconsider.

Wait....this is just not

Wait....this is just not right.
I have Graphic Design as one of my skills and when I get bubble that you will remove this skill if I don't do the test, BUT.....when I go to do the test all I see is "Basics of Web Graphic Design" test, and I am Graphic Designer for Print?
And for you this is right think to do?
C'mon sot out the things please!!!

I need more information, but

Microsoft SQL Server

The new taxonomy does not have a listing for "Microsoft SQL Server" which is a product I have been "experting" in since 1995 having obtained 2 Microsoft certifications.

Microsoft has created a lot of addons for this core product but the core product is still sold as a separate product:

https://www.google.com/search?q=microsoft+sql+server+2008&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a#q=microsoft+sql+server+2008&client=firefox-a&hs=q8g&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&source=univ&tbm=shop&tbo=u&sa=X&ei=oMiTUc_QMOTAigKwqYG4BQ&ved=0CEEQsxg&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&bvm=bv.46471029,d.cGE&fp=5b8853c031e01745&biw=1138&bih=523

The addons are in the new taxonomy but the core product is not.

Please correct this error.

skills....

and who will rate my skills, there are only 2 relevant tests for mechanical engineers and 95% of the clients have no idea of what they want or have no idea what everything is needed for a product to be realized from idea to a real product, and as I have the chance to notice only about 10% of the freelancers here ( engineers ) really know what are they doing, you really need more tests on mechanical engineering, CAD, FEA, as I noticed 60-70% of the tests are for programing (I might be wrong but not by much )
I have more than 15 years of engineering experience in various industries and I know what I can do, and I noticed that some of my skills are marked for removing, and I guess that is because someone does not know what that means

Hi Joseph - thanks for the feedback. We've taken it to heart and have taken steps to ensure this type of issue doesn't happen again.

I actually agree with weeding out the number of "skills"

Weeding out the number of skills makes sense, there were way too many.

However, why in heaven's name get rid of "writing" as a skill? Do I now have to add a dozen new bubbles when one did the trick just fine? I don't want a dozen bubbles, I think 6 to 10 is more than enough in my lines of work, it gets messy after that. I also hate the ones with no available corresponding tests. In an ideal world I would like 6 to no more than 10 green bubbles. Three are 2 more tests I have to do and one skill I will probably delete, not because I do not have it, but because I can not turn it green (no available tests.)

Petra, it was a mistake and

Petra, it was a mistake and is now corrected. There are a variety of writing skills for you to add on your profile.

Suggestion

I just had a thought - I quite like the way the skills correspond to taken tests. What I would now love to see is the same thing in reverse, a list of skills available against the taken tests. It would make it easier to choose the relevant skills bubbles to both reflect what we can do, and what we have done the tests in.

At the moment the process of adding skills bubbles that will show as green is a bit hit and miss. I know it is still being refined but I had quite a headache after rearranging my bubbles to reflect both what I can do, and show that I have the relevant test (by the bubble being being green.)

If I could go to my tests and click on a test result, and see which skills that test is linked to it would be much easier to choose the appropriate bubbles

Adobe and Microsoft

So far you are missing / removing about half the Adobe products (older ones like Premiere, but also new ones like Muse) and most of the Microsoft development skills. Windows 8 apps related skills, Microsoft Project, etc. You are also missing most of the javascript frameworks.

Seriously, in terms of epic fails, you guys are in a class of your own. When I see something new in the news section from an admin I think "What did you f* up this time!"

It indicates me to take a test for email handling but there is no such test. For my skills English it says to take English tests but I have already taken English skill tests.I think oDesk is doing this to prevent contractors those who misinterpret their skills but it is not a right decision to take.

Not At all Cool

You taking out so many skills that actually exist and clients look for, simply because you either don't know or heard about them? I mean no one is replying to what many other contractors are asking. Infusionsoft, Live chat support, are two out of 5 of my skills that were taken out These are some of the things that I get hired. Could you please stop playing around the skills and bring them back?

infusionsoft-administration

infusionsoft-administration and infusionsoft-development and live-chat-operator are all back online. Sorry about that!

Samir,

Earlier I took a test called "System Analysis". I do not see that test anymore. Also there is this generic test called "Office Skills". Even this one is one there any more. Could you please let me know if these test names are named differently.

Thank you,

Why there is no Linkedin data mining manaul?

I do Linkedin Data Mining through manually, when I am upgrading to Linkedin. It shows as Linkedin-API and Linkedin- recruiting. When I chose Linkedin-recruiting as skill it says "Skill 504226 is not babel" Why is it happening to me??

Do you please let me know what is the alternative?

Whoever called this, obviously got it wrong!!!

Did you guys bother asking users (contractors) about this? Whoever made this call made a pretty bad call IMO. If there are others who agree with me reply to this comment.
