best examples of cheap jobs 2

The other thread was getting too long so I decided to start a new one.

Now, I usually just gloss past any cheap jobs but this one was just too bad to ignore. I was tempted to apply just to tell him he's an idiot but I restrained myself. I'm used to seeing the editing jobs where the client wants 50,000 words edited for $10.00 but this client will only pay for words that you change regardless of how long the document is and only if he accepts the changes

"I'll pay you 1 cent for every word you edit in or take out of the story AND ONLY if I keep your changes when I review you story with a Microsoft Office Compare.

Your job will be to take the 2000-5000 word story I send you: add and also take away pieces you do not think add value to the story.

If you send me back a a document and I keep only one or two words, I WILL only pay you the 1 cent, 2 cents. But I am pretty generous on what is acceptable.

I've got about 50,000 more words til the book is complete, so there is much potential to make money.

You will have ONE WEEK from when I open the contract with you, if you do not complete it within that time frame, I will close the contract.

Also, I will retain all rights to the work."

I'm used to seeing cheap editing jobs here but this is the first time I've seen someone only willing to pay for words that get changed (and accepted)

The really sad thing is that there are already three applicants.

I think he has some weird

I think he has some weird idea about the cost of living in developing countries or maybe he is too reluctant to get out of his la la land.

I say get the job

When he sends you the file, delete everything in it, and send it back. Job done.

Of course, he will have to approve some of your removals, right? And then he must pay you for them.

That's genius

Laughing out loud

Can you just "see" the client's face when he is frantically searching the file for text, ANY text...

Frankly considering what little we know about the client deleting the lot is probably the most sensible editing the contractor could perform.

Well, I found the job

Well, I found the job listing.

He has 96 completed contracts. 1.00 to 12.00 $.

Ecommerce Website from Scratch

I need a website to be developed from scratch similar to this http://www.ecost.com/home?source=46ECOST

I am on a tight budget and won't be paying more than $50 for this website.

Also I need someone that is experienced and can get the job done within 1 week. If someone bids higher than $50 and does not read this job posting or understand it than I will hire and will not be paying for anything higher than the $50 and also please do not ask for anything upfront because I don't pay anyone upfront.

I wonder

I wonder if this job was posted by the person who has been spamming the message boards lately about never paying upfront payments. It wouldn't surprise me if it was.

$0.10/hour * 24 hours = $2.4/day * 365 day = $876 and 8760 hours in a year. She is very responsive. Laughing out loud

Is not that the effective way of disintermediation

There should be a minimum of this lowest rate. I mean which part of the world has a minimum wage of $0.01/h... Isn't obvious they are involved outside odesk. Even their feedback clearly states what they are doing. I really wonder why they are not charged for disintermediation.

me too, I really wonder why.

It's always best to submit a ticket, only flagging hardly ever works. I used to submit tickets and they would usually respond fast, but now I only flag. They need to hire more people to check flagged jobs and profiles.

You are probably right but my

You are probably right but my last 3 tickets (on actual issues) had response times of 2-3 weeks so I don't see the point in sending tickets. oDesk should be happy we're flagging them to begin with, no? Not to pick on the mod, but isn't keeping this site clean part of the job description?

"She never underestimated a

"She never underestimated a contractor" : well, she never OVERestimated what the work of a contractor was worth either!
For these low-paid jobs, you can often see this kind of "interesting" feedback:
- from the client: bad feedback, bad rating
- from the contractor: excellent feedback, very respectful and bordering on the slavish ("thanks for the opportunity, dear Sir" or the like, at the least).
These contractors clearly don't value themselves or their work, and/or are desperate. That's how we end with five-star rated "big clients" from countless contracts, who are in fact people who spent a grand total of 30 dollars on worshiping contractors. So don't forget to take a quick look at the old contracts and total spent : big client with 5-star feedback may be someone involved in large-scale exploitation.

Client Feedback:

* was a very good contractor, I enjoyed working with her and will likely have additional jobs for her in the future. She is always available when needed, highly recommended. Great job! @ 5/5

Awesome contractor! Job completed professionally. Definitely will work with her again. @ 5/5

* was a very good and excellent data entry worker, hardworking and excellent in communication skills. We will hire him again. Highly recommended. Awesome!!.. @ 5/5

I was wrong in this case...

I was wrong in this case... It's good to know that some of these clients at least behave nicely despite the fact they pay extremely low rates even for data entry.
I'll see if I come across another of these jobs to show you what I meant.

good example of professionalism

Sorry! My expressions are not to prove you wrong. I'm just trying to say, in this case both client & contractors behaving like pros. Are those not a good example of professionalism?

No need to be sorry! I didn't

No need to be sorry! I didn't take offence. I just said I was wrong in this particular case.
Or, maybe we were both mistaken... Such a smooth and professional relationship with such low rates looks too good to be true. I'm not saying the feedback isn't honest. But could they be paying higher rates outside oDesk?

I don't believe they are nice people.

I bet they don't, I think they make subsequent work conditional on good feedback. It's hard to believe anyone would really appreciate the opportunity to work at $1 an hour.

How is it possible?

What I can't get my head around is how someone making pennies per hour has access to a computer and internet connection to do the work?

wondering about the same too

wondering about the same too

Fortunately or unfortunately

Fortunately or unfortunately (which ever you want to look at it), I would say Majority of contractors are living with their parents, utilities are paid by parents or other siblings and food is always available in the fridge. Of course they share some if and whenever they have some earnings. Basic Business, No Operational Cost = 100% revenue. plus they can get to watch t.v everyday whenever they have nothing to do.

More free work

I just came across a job posting where the client had stated that they were willing to pay a high price for experience (the $$$ symbol).

As I read the post, I come to a line stating "This is not a paid position yet (though that is our goal." So I guess they're willing to pay a lot of money but just not right now.

The funny thing is the title of the job posting is ANGRY EDITOR NEEDED. Maybe that's why they don't want to pay anything, it'll make their editor's angry to know they're doing all this work for free.

So far, only one person's applied.

Or maybe they consider the high price for experience person is below $0.50/hour here.

I'm almost tempted to do this

I'm almost tempted to do this job for free, just so when people ask what I do for a living I can tell them I'm an Angry Editor. Wonder if they have vacancies for an Irate Copywriter or a Slightly Miffed Proofreader?

haha :)

Doesn't seem so bad at first, but

Average bid of clients interviewed for writing/editing job is $7.92 per hour.

However ... "Grammar and uniqueness must be top quality - CNN and NY Times quality."

I'm sure CNN pays its writers less than $8 an hour.

Client is looking for freelancers in North America, so none of that "cost of living" excuse.

Editor wanted

I have started using David's and Stephen's profile link to decline, it's a nice way to decline Smile

You think oDesk is bad?

I just found a freelancing website where people are offering to build websites for $1 a website.

OK, the whole site could be a scam, but I think it makes the $.50 per article writers here seem a bit more classy.

Science writer for $1 an article

Science writers needed for a start up scientific magazine. The candidate should be able to understand science and technology breakthroughs and write articles of around 400 words. The price is fixed at 1 dollar for articles based on another news source and 2 dollars for articles written based on research publications. The articles will be checked for plagiarism. The source content will be provided. 2 positions are available

Yeah, someone is going to read and analyse a research article from a scientific journal for 2 dollars, and do it properly.

This is why there is so much misinformation on the web and people are so ignorant about science - from reading the crap that these "writers" will probably produce.

Must work for under $1 an hour.

we need a fast and very productive person

- be fluent in english
- other languages might help in case you find none english review sites in your mother tounge language.
- must know how to use excel
- must work for under $1 an hour.
- must be willing to work around 6 hours a day when we have work to be done (we will let you know)
- must be willing to work indefinitely (we want you to be a part of our growing team so this job is for the long run)
