Taking action on negative feedback

Low feedback scores and a high number of disputes aren't acceptable on oDesk. We constantly monitor for these situations, and take swift and appropriate action.

Responding to high-risk activity

High-risk activity includes flagged content, fixed price abuse, spam, and other unwanted acts. oDesk members who violate our terms of service are no longer allowed to be a part of the oDesk community, and cannot re-register under a new account. It's an unfortunate but necessary part of what we do to keep the oDesk workplace safe and productive.

We check up on identities

On oDesk, we want to make sure everyone is using real identities, so we have launched an ID verification program to help protect both employers and contractors. We don't allow multiple people to use a single oDesk account, and we may ask follow-up verification questions to confirm identity. Of course, we won't share your identity publicly unless you choose to do so.

Real people. Real photos.

Get to know who you're working with. It's great to put a face to a name, and that's why we encourage real photos and names on oDesk profiles.

We've got the digits

As an additional security measure, in certain situations we'll ask for a cell phone number and give it a call for a vocal verification. This helps us ensure everyone has the right contact information.

Your work is private and secure

Privacy is important to oDesk, and we want you to decide who can see what and when.

We don't sell your info

All of the information you provide to oDesk is for the benefit of the employer/contractor relationship. We won't collect your information and sell it. We promise.

Public or private?

Employers and contractors have the option to decide whether they want their job postings and profiles to be public or private. This gives you the flexibility to decide when and how you want to share your information.

Locking it down

Security is serious business at oDesk. In fact, we're one of the first sites with site-wide encryption. Our state-of-the-art security system ensures your information is safe.

We're minding the store

We take a hands-on approach to monitoring the jobs and contractors that appear on oDesk, and invite our trusted customers to do the same.

Great projects

We have rules for employers creating job postings, and we're always monitoring to make sure they're upheld. Once a job is submitted, we'll review it within 30 minutes. If it's not legit, it doesn't get on the site. And yes, we do this 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Skilled contractors

Our skilled global contractors are required to follow our policies that promote honesty and accuracy, and we encourage them to post past job experiences and portfolio items. We also provide free skill tests on over 300 topics, so employers can immediately see their strengths.

Keep your projects secret

Part of being a contractor at oDesk is agreeing to a nondisclosure agreement (NDA) for all projects. This means you'll have an NDA already in place when you hire contractors through oDesk.

No more generic cover letters

We believe cover letters should be specific and relevant. We encourage employers to flag spam letters, and we regularly conduct spot reviews to find (and toss) the ones that don't meet our requirements.

You have the power

If something doesn't seem right, employers and contractors can flag it. Spam and abusive or inappropriate content can always be brought to our attention so we can keep our marketplace honest.

Hourly work and hourly pay are guaranteed

We're the first and only service to guarantee an hour billed is an hour worked, and that an hour worked is an hour paid.
