I am looking for someone with good spatial problem solving skills and attention to detail to help with designing data collection routes for our urban heat island mapping campaigns. For the past five summers, hundreds of community volunteers from around the country have participated in these heat island mapping campaigns in which they drive sensors along pre-planned routes to sample temperature and humidity across urban areas. Using the results, we generate models of urban heat that help cities to take action to mitigate heat and safeguard the health and wellbeing of residents who need it the most. This position involves taking "places of interest" and designing driving routes according to specific criteria on the Google platform, My Maps. While we have attempted to automate this routing problem (i.e. the "traveling salesman"), for a number of reasons, this process still requires careful manual design of routes. We are looking for someone who can perform the route design steps in My Maps according to our criteria and make adjustments based on feedback. The position will involve likely 20 to 40 hours/week during June and July. If someone is able to fulfill this position and also develop/prove an automated approach, we can discuss expanding the scope of this project.
