Job Description

Position Title: Consultant: Smart phone Application designer
Start Date: January 16, 2013 (start date negotiable within the range of a couple of weeks)
Duration: 6 months (1st sample: 1 April, 2nd revised sample: 1 May, finished product: 1 July)
Contract payment: full contract will be $27,000- payment based on meeting set milestones, $2,000 will be set aside for payment for debugging during the first six months of app going live (September 2013-February 2014)

The Ottawa Coalition to End Violence Against Women is looking for an experienced smartphone application designer to develop an app for our “Safer Campuses” project that seeks to engage post-secondary students by giving them the skills to become active bystanders that can contribute to preventing violence against women.

The Ottawa Coalition to End Violence Against Women (OCTEVAW) is an incorporated, non-profit, non-partisan organization composed of a network of member organizations and individuals located within the City of Ottawa and surrounding regions. As a coalition we are dedicated to ending violence against women through leadership, education, advocacy, and political action, and to promoting a coordinated response to violence against women.

The Ottawa Rape Crisis Centre (ORCC) has been providing counselling and support services to victims and survivors of sexual violence for over 37 years. The ORCC continues to demonstrate its leadership both locally and provincially in prevention, research, education and counselling on sexual assault and sexual violence issues. They have strong partnerships with Ottawa Police Services, the Ottawa Carleton District School Board, Youth Services Bureau, the Ottawa Hospital and Corrections Canada to name a few

Core Responsibilities:
• Develop a smartphone application for Apple iOS and Android operating systems under the direction of a steering committee. The app will include graphics, video, social media links, several pages
• Present the committee with first app sample by 1 April and second sample by 1 May and finished product by 1 July
• Openly communicate with the "Safer Campuses" project coordinator (first supervisor/point of contact for steering committee) and Executive Director of OCTEVAW

Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor of Science (Computer Science, Software Engineering) or equivalent experience
• Ability to develop for standard mobile devices: iOS and Android (must be able to provide samples of previous work)
• Knowledge of designing interfaces, including the unique tasks of designing applications for small screen size (must be able to provide samples of previous work)
• Excellent debugging, problem-solving, and analytical skills (must be available to address issues as they arise from September 2013-February 2014)
• Strong organizational and communication skills, both verbal and written
• Strong attention to detail
• Knowledgeable about latest trends in interactive experiences across a variety of mediums with a strong desire for innovation
• Strong time management skills

1st sample: 1 April
2nd sample: 1 May
Finished product: 1 July
Going live: 1 September
Debugging availability: September-February
