Job Description

We built a website for a leading family owned restaurant in Denver. The developer that has been working on the site has been struggling to meet our requirements and we are looking for someone to fix the remaining issues. You can see the site in its current status at http://www.chinookdenver.com/wp/ I am attaching some of the original mockups. We are using different background images but the main elements are all present on the actual website. You can notice a number of smaller deviations that take away from the original look and feel of the site. Here are issues we'd like to address: 1. SLUGGISH MOBILE PERFORMANCE The site loads very slow in mobile mode and we have a feeling that the existing theme is causing the problem. We're using a theme called "Scroller V 1.0". Even though it is called responsive it is not geared to load different sets of background images and we had to tweak it to load a narrowed version of our desktop background images. I would prefer the approach to have a number of breakpoints and switch to smaller background graphics automatically. This might create some issues since we'd might not have enough vertical space in our images to fill the background. We are trying to avoid black bars in-between the pictures in the mobile version of the site. I would ask you to evaluate what is causing the slow loading of the site and come up with some suggestions that don't involve us sacrificing functionality. I think a smarter loading sequence could do the trick. We could load lower resolution images in the initial views and load the higher resolution versions later in the background. 2. ELEMENTS OF HOMEPAGE NOT LINING UP PROPERLY The prior developer has had a hard time to resemble our mockups with the current fluid layout. It should look very similar to what our mockups look like. Currently the main content box is too narrow in a full screen view. The prior developer set some elements to absolute positioning but this caused problems when the screen size was being reduced (vertical view in iPad). 3. TEXT SIZE INCONSISTENCIES Currently we have different text sizes within some of the text in the white (transparent) content boxes on the homepage. The text in "hours" and "maps" is smaller than the text in "celebrate" and the other sections. In mobile the text for "hours" is bigger than in "maps". This should be consisted for each platform. We don;t want the mobile text to be to small but it also shouldn't be too large. 4. MENUS The food menus are using a plugin and are created dynamically. They need to be styled better. The titles of the menu should be bigger than the categories and the the titles of the single items. The descriptions should be even smaller than that. There should be a little spacing above each category of the menus but the spacing between the title and the actual beginning of the menu needs to be reduced. 5. IMAGE GALLERIES The view of the image galleries needs to be improved (example: http://chinookdenver.com/wp/myportfolio/coffee-shop/). The sidebar should have the same styling as the sidebar of the blog section: http://chinookdenver.com/wp/blog/. The arrows should be replaced with red buttons explaining their functionality (more galleries / next gallery). 6. CONTACT FORM The contact form stretches into the footer. The footer should be sitting underneath it. 7. OPEN TABLE FORM The link to reservations in mobile goes straight to the Open Table website. We want to either embed an open table form (styled in purple) or use the form from our desktop homepage. When we used the open table form we did get a bug in Chrome/Android that our prior developer wasn't able to resolve. I would also be ok with an enlarged version of our desktop version. We had it in there once but the drop down buttons where too small. 8. DAILY SPECIALS Our prior developer suggested using a Wordpress plugin for the menus and the daily specials. It's called Easy Restaurant Manager and Easy Restaurant Menu Manager Daily Specials Widget. The daily specials widget won't install and we get an error: Fatal error: Cannot access empty property in /home/chinookd/public_html/wp-content/plugins/easy-restaurant-menu-manager-widget/lib/class.ermm-specials-widget.php on line 201 This would have to be debugged. The daily specials section is meant to work as follows: The restaurant needs the option to enter a daily lunch special, a weekly lunch special, a daily dinner specials and a weekly dinner special in advance. They also need to be able to determine which of these meals will be shown in the teaser box on the homepage at any given day. If there is no specials that the entire teaser box will simply be hidden. We'd like to see how much this widget can do. If this doesn't work we need to look at alternate ways to provide this functionality.
