I have a group of businesses all connected to teaching English as a foreign language and need a coordinator for my virtual marketing team.
I have begun to assemble a virtual team via odesk and it is going reasonably well, but as the owner and managing director of the businesses I need someone to take over the coordination and direction. I lack both time and sufficient marketing skills.
I've had some bad experiences with "marketing" people in the past, so I apologise if this posting is a bit aggressive, but I would rather be honest up front.
I am looking for someone who is
*A native speaker of English with a high level of grammar and spelling. Don't get me wrong - 100% of my customers and about 30% of all my staff are non native speakers and I love them all, but recently I have had to get involved in final proof reading to correct errors (not even my strong point!) and need someone who I can trust to do this without my oversight. As my time zone is UTC - 3 I am probably looking for someone either side of that timezone from an English speaking country.
*Intelligent enough to be able to understand what I want without hours and hours of explanation from me. Don't get me wrong, I will give you as clear instructions as I can, but there has got to be a point where you take the ball and run.
*Modern enough to be able to use google docs, odesk and email instead of constantly demanding skype calls and voice contact - I'm too busy and prefer the clarity of written text. A 15 minute weekly skype chat is fine, but everything else is in gmail and google docs etc.
*Experienced enough to be able to contribute to the full range of marketing we are doing, including PPC, SEO, SMM, SMS, Website development, online and offline PR and advertising, local events, Enterprise content management, print design etc etc etc
*Mature enough not to be jealous of the odesk team I have already built up- I'm not interested in replacing all my team with your time or best friend suppliers, I need a coordinator not a doer. In addition I don't want someone who is going to try and persuade me to completely rebrand or tell me that I don't understand my industry - if so you are not welcome. I am looking to make quick and effective progress using my existing base, not reinvent my entire business. If you prove your worth over many months maybe I will be interested in more significant changes. In addition, I don't want a print quote from your brother bob.
*Available enough to get the work done in the timeframe that I want. If you can't turn a project round within a month what are you doing?
*International enough to really enjoy other cultures and communicating with non native speakers of English. You have to understand that because of the nature of my business it is important for us to have non native speakers on the team producing content and doing the work, not necessarily because they are cheaper, but because they understand my product from the start - native speakers of English often have no idea what my market is about, since they have never had to learn English or any other language and can't understand why anyone would pay for this.
On the positive side (!) I consider that I am a good communicator and give clear directions to team members, have an interesting and enjoyable business and love working via odesk. I have around 60 real on the ground employees in the UK and Ireland that you will also be interacting with and several business premises in the same regions. We have loads of projects on the go and are a business in growth phase, so its fairly hectic and fun.
Finally, this has the potential to be a long term role, it is my intention to find someone I can rely on to be a part time Marketing director. I hope this is an attractive idea.
