All of you have probably had extensive experience with face-to-face (FTF) instruction (as a student and/or an instructor), and at least a little with asynchronous instruction. Think about the kinds of communication that take place in these two different modes of instruction. As a learner, compare and contrast communication in FTF and asynchronous "classrooms." What do you see as the strengths of each as far as communication is concerned? What are the weaknesses in communication using FTF and asynchronous methods?
This week, we discussed the differences between face-to-face and online communication, and talked about techniques that could be used to improve communication online; we also focused on the concept of Learning Communities--what they are, how they operate, and how they evolve over time. Based on everything that we've read and discussed so far, I'd like you to collectively come up with a set of ground rules that might be put in place in a learning environment such as this one (i.e., Lotus Notes) to enhance and improve asynchronous online communication. Feel free to be creative, and to bring in outside resources if you'd like. There is no right or wrong way to complete this exercise!
