JOB DESCRIPTION SQL DBA
Overview: -
The role will be working in the SQL DBA team. The SQL DBA team supports over 300 SQL databases. Many applications use multiple databases to support them, so reducing the number of distinct application instances to just over 200.
The DBA team is responsible for maintaining and managing all SQL databases, with some SQL application support to deliver a global SQL DBA support capability within the IT Operations organisation.
The DBA team is responsible for providing support within the scope and remit of the IT Operations organisation.
A mixture of in-house developed web applications and 3rd party PC client and web applications are supported. Key to this support is the DBA team, who support multiple complex solutions and therefore require skilled and capable individuals that are adept and versatile to meet the demanding needs of such a complex and diverse environment.
It is vital that the DBA can work both within a team environment and when necessary on their own initiative.
Main purpose of the role: -
 You will be jointly responsible for the operation and support of the SQL based systems, as part of this role you will provide SQL DBA
 Tasks undertaken by L1 SQL DBA team include, but are not restricted to:
o Monitoring SQL Server environment.
 SQL Server Error logs
 SCOM
 Indigenous monitoring system alert emails
o Raising and resolving helpdesk calls
o Carrying out day to day SQL DBA duties and support, which include daily, weekly, monthly checks
o Assisting with technical issues
o Identification of potential issues and alerting the relevant technical support teams to such issues
Skills Required:
Demonstrable Experience
Candidates must have:
o At least 2-3 years recent experience in a Operational DBA role
o Operational SQL DBA Support in a multi-application environment which implies multi-server (> 6 production), multi-database (> 6 production)
o T-SQL programming of ad-hoc queries, stored procedures and triggers
o Skill in the identification of performance problems and implementation of solutions to correct performance problems
o Skill in conducting tests to newly installed/upgraded software
o Exceptional English language skills coupled with experience of dealing with business people based in the UK

o Write technical procedures and documentation for the applications including operations, user guide, etc.
Candidates are preferred to have:
o t-SQL programming of user defined functions (UDFs)
Technical Skills
Candidates must have:
o Core knowledge of MS SQL Server 2000/2005/2008/2008 R2. Good understanding of database architecture, system processes, SSMS/SSIS and other SQL Server Tools.
o Backup and recovery methodology, understanding and troubleshooting related errors.
o Database health check
o Database security policies implementation and user maintenance, Understanding to domain user and accounts.
o SQL Server Logs monitoring
o T-SQL programming of ad-hoc queries, stored procedures and triggers
o Should be able to manage multiple DB Servers/databases remotely
o Data import and export methodologies - BCP, DTS (Data Transformation Services, part of SQL 2000) and SSIS (SQL Server Integration Services on SQL 2005 and SQL 2008).
o Windows Server 2003/08 and later version of Microsoft O/S, networking skills to work in a Microsoft networking and security environment.
o SCOM Management (Monitoring and Closing alerts)
o Remedy Management (Raising and resolving helpdesk calls)
o Awareness of High availability solutions.
o Database Trouble shooting and assistance to development team
o Awareness of Change management Process
o Knowledge of SQL 2012 would be beneficial.
Candidates are preferred to have:
o SQL 2000 installation, upgrading and patching
o SQL 2005 installation, upgrading and patching
o SQL Replication
o SQL Log Shipping
o SQL 2005/08 SSIS
o SQL Clustered for high availability
o Windows Server 2008
o Database design
o SCOM or similar monitoring tool
Candidates nice to have:
o SQL Server 2012 Overview
o Active Directory concepts (AD 2000 or later)

Qualifications
Candidates must have:
o B. Tech. / B.E. / MCA/ BCA from a premier institute or equiv experience in software design or related field
Candidates are preferred to have one or more of the following:
 Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) SQL Server
 Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP) Database Administrator.
 Microsoft Certified Database Administrator (MCDBA) Microsoft SQL Server
Soft Skills
Candidates must have:
o Good English communication - verbal and written. The ability to create operating procedure and other documentation is important.
o Ability to work both as an effective team member and independently
o Ability to work under pressure
o Tenacity in problem solving
